Keep your eyes on the field and not on the stands, dude.
A high school announcer found himself out of a job after getting a little too distracted by the moms in the stands instead of the play on the field during a recent high school girl's soccer game in Kansas.
According to
Awful Announcing, the hot mic incident happened during a game in the Kansas Class 4A-1A state championship tournament on Saturday between Rose Hill and McPherson. During halftime of the game, a parent who was there caught the announcer speaking to somebody else in the booth without realizing his mic was turned off.
After chatting about how terrible the game was, the other person in the booth could be heard commenting that there was at least one good thing about the matchup:
“A bonus though of calling high school soccer? Girls soccer? For high school? The soccer moms.”
And that's when announcer Toby Moore of NFHS Network began giving his thoughts on one particular mom he spotted in the stands:
"F*** yeah, baby. Up top, baby. The one that’s facing us? See if she can tear it the f*** off. I can’t see the legs, but I can feel the a** from here."
Well alrighty then...
Moore could also be heard acknowledging that his comments could get him in trouble, still not realizing that they were broadcast to the entire stadium:
“This conversation never happened, by the way. We’d get in trouble. I would have never had this conversation if [inaudible name] was sitting in that chair. We’ve been around long enough; we know what we’re doing.”
Well spoiler alert, after the parent who caught the comments on video posted them online and sent them to
Awful Announcing, Moore did indeed lose his job and will no longer be allowed to cover KSHSAA events in the future. He also reportedly will no longer be working for the local producer, 810 Varsity productions.

In a statement, Moore acknowledged that he was the one who made the comments and issued an apology:
“I would like to apologize to the Rose Hill and McPherson schools, players, coaches, families, and communities for my remarks last Saturday. They were tasteless, stupid, and inexcusable. Those comments did not reflect the tremendous season and hard work both sides had during the year.
Thank you to KSHSAA and NFHS for allowing me the privilege to call games on their network. I sincerely and deeply apologize for my tasteless and hurtful remarks and ask forgiveness from those that were hurt by my words.”
Tough scene. Obviously the lesson here is you probably shouldn't be saying that stuff at all, but if you do, you definitely gotta make sure the mic is off.
Oh, and Toby was once a contestant on Wheel of Fortune. Not relevant to the story, I just thought it was funny.
