Is this my sign to go into the taco business?
Torchy’s Tacos founder has listed his Austin, Texas, home for sale and is shaking up the real estate scene by listing his compound as the city’s most expensive piece of property.
Mike Rypka founded Torchy’s in 2006. He began his business out of a food truck and slowly expanded it to brick-and-mortar stores. Now, Torchy’s has over 120 locations across sixteen states, with the majority being in Texas. Clearly, he’s sold a lot of fried avocados, Mr. Orange, and Republican tacos for him to afford this stunning lakefront home.
This property is the perfect place to enjoy a margarita from one of the three structures found on the compound. Rypka is selling all three lots for an astonishing $25 million, or the buyer can purchase two for $19 million. However, no matter how the property is split up, the main house is included in the sale, which features a home that was built in 1999 and renovated by Rypka, who worked with Britt Design Group to redesign the interiors. The 10,227-square-foot home features five bedrooms, three kitchens, eight common living spaces, informal and formal dining rooms, a safe room, and a walk-in freezer.
Did you think that was a lot of living space? Well, that doesn’t even include the room for guests. There are three additional guest rooms with an attached kitchenette.
Outside the main house is access to Lake Austin, a pool, a hot tub, an outdoor kitchen, and what might be one of the most vital components for hosting: a swim-up bar.
Although the home is stunning on its own, Rypka did not want the interiors to be so serious. As he’s lived in Austin since the ’90s, he wanted the interiors to be funky and eclectic like the city, featuring large art pieces and some graffiti (which Austin is known for).
“It’s a big fancy house, and we didn’t want to take ourselves too seriously. Not everything has to be ornate.”
He told Austin Monthly in 2020, noting that this home has become his and his son’s little slice of heaven.
If you are interested in purchasing the three lots altogether, the nearly five-acre compound includes 450 feet of water frontage, making it the largest listing by acre in Austin and the highest-dollar listing. According to Mansion Global, the listing agent, Eric Moreland of Moreland Properties, commented about the magnitude of this property.
“This listing is one of the largest acreage offerings currently available for sale on Lake Austin that is located ‘inside’ the Pennybacker Bridge on the Austin side of the lake.”
While some might see this $25 million price tag and suck back, $19 million for the two main lots is still a lot, even removing the third parcel of land from the compound’s sale. But when putting into perspective, another waterfront home on Lake Austin is asking $19.5 million, and a Westlake home is asking $19.9 million, so it’s pretty close in line with other luxury waterfront homes.
