Democrats Plan “Economic Blackout,” Promise Not To Go Shopping Or Buy Anything Today To Protest Donald Trump

That’ll show ’em.

We’re a month into President Donald Trump’s second term, and Democrats are having a hard time coming up with a plan to fight back against everything he’s doing. They’ve tried taking him to court to block his executive actions with little success, so basically at this point they’re just left with Chuck Schumer trying to awkwardly lead chants and Congresswomen saying they need to “fuck Trump.”

It seems like the left has been caught flat-footed with the blistering pace that the second Trump administration is moving, and at this point their brains are just broken. Of course these are the same people that were broken during his first term, but this time around it seems like nobody on the left really expected him to win in 2024, so they’re having a really hard time coming to terms with it or coming up with a plan to fight back against it.

Well until now. Now they’ve finally come up with a plan. A brilliant idea to show that they mean business and they’re ready to fight back against Trump. And it starts today, when they…don’t buy anything for 24 hours.

Stop laughing, they’re serious this time. This one’s really going to work.

The idea for the “economic blackout” started with People’s Union USA, a group whose website says they are “a movement of people, unionizing to take back control of our economy, government and future of our country.” (They also have a bunch of merch for sale, which ironically is still available to purchase today).

Apparently the plan is to not make any purchases today to get the attention of large corporations. The group urges members to not make any purchases, either online or in-store, and cites retailers like Amazon, Walmart and Best Buy to avoid. (Are people really shopping at Best Buy on a regular basis? I end up going there like once every two years when there’s something I need).

The planned blackout encourages people to “only buy essentials if absolutely necessary,” and if you have to spend money today, do it at small, local businesses instead of major retail chains.

Of course aside from the issue of getting everybody onboard, a lot of people on social media have pointed out the obvious flaw in the plan: Wouldn’t people just stock up the day before? Seems like it would just even out in the long run…but hey, I don’t have a fancy socialist website with a merch store so what do I know.

After the People’s Union USA announced their plans for a boycott, other groups followed suit and urged their followers to sit out the shopping today. Some groups are targeting companies that have recently shut down their DEI offices, with Target seeming to be a popular target for boycotts. (Ironically, the company saw a 5% decrease in sales back in 2023 when conservatives vowed to boycott the store over their “pride month” clothes and accusations that the company was targeting children. As a result, Target didn’t carry their pride month collection in 2024, so that boycott was actually effective).

And the most impactful boycott recently came when Bud Light partnered with transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney for a marketing campaign, leading to backlash led by names like Kid Rock and John Rich. The iconic beer brand lost billions of dollars from the controversy, and even lost their long-held spot as the top-selling beer brand in America.

So will today’s boycott send the same message, and cause these companies to rethink doing away with their DEI initiatives? Or will it be a massive flop that stores barely notice?

I know which one my money’s on – and I’ll be spending it today like I always do.
