Shane Gillis is BACK on Saturday Night Live.
Fresh off of SNL’s 50th Anniversary Show (which had some people upset), the long-running sketch comedy show is tapping Shane Gillis to host once again. The comedian first hosted SNL back in February of last year, which was at that point a huge development in the saga, considering the comedy show had once announced Gillis as a cast member, then parted ways with him after “offensive” material was uncovered in some of his previous work.
Later last year, news also broke that Shane Gillis was allegedly given the opportunity to come back to the show for a semi-full-time role to play Donald Trump during the election cycle, and the popular comedian apparently hit SNL with a, “Thanks, but no thanks.” Despite Saturday Night Live initially trying to distance themselves from the comedian, it now appears that they’ll take him back any chance they get… undoubtedly to help out with the show’s ratings.
And this time around, they really organized a show that’s “for the bros.” This Saturday, Shane Gillis will host and Tate McRae is set to be the musical guest:

I’ve got a good feeling the young men demographic will be tuning into the show on March 1 like their lives depends on it.
All of that being said, it’s honestly really interesting to see Saturday Night Live go back to Shane Gillis so quickly. As I stated earlier, the comedian has already hosted the show once… and it provided some uncomfortable moments. From the get-go, there was a weird vibe between Gillis and the studio audience. It was almost like everyone that was there in person wasn’t in the mood to laugh?
Just watch his monologue and you’ll see exactly what I mean:
Notice that the SNL band wasn’t too into his stand-up? The comedian even at one point said out loud after a joke, “I thought it was funny, alright? You don’t think that’s funny?”
Though his jokes and some of the sketches didn’t go over well for the studio audience, Shane Gillis fans – as well as fans of standup comedy in general – loved his appearance on NBC’s staple show. And he’s already off to a hot start with this second time around on Saturday Night Live. By that, I mean SNL put out a teaser for this weekend’s show and it was… actually really funny.
In the typical format for their Thursday promos, host Shane Gillis stood in front of the iconic Studio 8H stage, flanked by musical guest Tate McRae and an SNL cast member… this time being featured player Jane Wickline. After Shane introduced himself and also informed those watching that Tate McRae would be performing on the show, Wickline pointed out that Shane was once also a “featured player” on the show. Gillis hilariously responded with:
“Yeah, it was a cool day.”
The SNL cast member then asked if Shane had any advice for someone like her in their first season on the show. Gillis had another comical comeback to that question:
“I’d say just get fired immediately. It worked for me.”

That’s a joke… but it’s actually the truth. After Shane Gillis was fired from SNL after internet sleuth uncovered some the material that was deemed “offensive,” the comedian’s career really took off. He’s arguably one of the most popular names – if not the most popular – in all of stand-up right now. And he also started his own sketch series called Gilly and Keeves, has his own TV show on Netflix called Tires, boasts multiple stand-up specials, has a brand partnership with Bud Light, and he’s about to be a two-time host of Saturday Night Live.
Yeah, I’d say everything worked out for ol’ Shane Gillis in the end…
