Mel Gibson Reveals His Malibu Home Burnt Down While He Was On Joe Rogan’s Podcast: “Can All Be Replaced, These Are Only Things”

Mel Gibson

Mel Gibson can be added to the list of celebrities and high-profile people that have lost their homes to the California wildfires. Entire neighborhoods are being wiped off the map as the Palisades and Eaton fires have collectively burned over 33,000 acres. And the conditions continue to look bleak, as high winds and low humidity in the region foster a perfect environment for the wildfires to spread – and new ones to spark. The blazing and uncontrollable fires were apparently started in the residential community known as the Pacific Palisades, and they’ve since killed at least five people and have left hundreds of people without a home in the greater Los Angeles area. Over 130,000 people have been evacuated, and more than 300,000 homes are without power – all while air quality levels have reached hazardous classification. Firefighters and first responders are doing their best to control the blaze, but they’ve run into a number of issues. Strong Santa Ana winds continue to spread and empower the existing fires that are burning, and the Los Angeles Fire Department has had water supply issues, as fire hydrants have failed in much of the area. Those challenges have led to some of the fires (Palisades, Eaton) that are burning in California to be categorized as "under 8% contained." Obviously, Los Angeles is home to many Hollywood stars, and a number have taken to social media to share that they've experienced the devastation first hand. One of those people is actor Mel Gibson, who called into News Nation to talk about the total loss of his Malibu home. They first asked how he was doing, and he was surprisingly upbeat for someone that had just lost their house to a wildfire: "I'm doing well. You know... it's just a thing. It's obviously kind of devastating and emotional. I've lived there for a long time and I had all my stuff. You remember George Carlin talking about your stuff? I had my stuff there and I've been relieved from the burden of my stuff." Gibson was then asked if he was in the area when the fire spread to his neighborhood and destroyed his home and everything inside of it. The 69-year-old revealed that he was actually thousands of miles away in Texas recording an episode of The Joe Rogan Experience: "I was in Austin, Texas. I was doing the Rogan podcast and I was kind of ill at ease while we were talking because I knew my neighborhood was on fire. So I thought, 'I wonder if my place is still there.' When I got home, sure enough, it wasn't there. I went home and said to myself, 'Well, at least I don't have any of those pesky plumbing problems anymore.'" That's a very positive way to look at it. As far as if anything was salvageable from his residence, Gibson described the remains of his home as "ash." There was only one thing that somehow survived the destructive path of the wildfire, as he excitedly told News Nation: "The chickens survived. It was amazing. We had a chicken coop and they were fine, so we gave them some grain and some water and they're happy and laying eggs and stuff... The vehicles were gone, everything. It was completely toasted. I've never seen such a complete burn. It's like someone did it on purpose to really destroy every aspect of it." Now, like many in California right now, Gibson is left picking up the pieces. He jokingly said on air that he's got a nice piece of property available for sale in Malibu if anyone was interested in buying, continuing his glass-half-full perspective. But he summed it all up towards the end of the interview saying that ironically, he feels very fortunate: "I lived there for about 14 or 15 years, so it was home to me and I had a lot of personal things there that I can't get back. Everything from photographs to files to personal things that I had from over the years. That can all be replaced. These are only things. The good news is those in my family and those I love are all well." https://twitter.com/TheChiefNerd/status/1877707445541175785
