New Orleans Police Release Dramatic Bodycam Video Of Shootout With Terrorist In Bourbon Street Attack

Heroes. The FBI is continuing their investigation into the horrific terrorist attack in New Orleans during the early morning hours of New Year's Day when 42-year old Shamsud Din Jabbar drove a white pickup truck down Bourbon Street, leaving 14 dead and dozens injured. Jabbar drove around a police cruiser that was stationed at the end of Bourbon Street and sped for nearly three blocks down the crowded street as partygoers celebrated the new year before ultimately crashing into a construction lift. He then got out of his truck and began shooting at police, who returned fire and killed him to bring his rampage to an end. The FBI has revealed that Jabbar had posted several videos expressing his support for ISIS in the hours leading up to the attack, and had an ISIS flag on the back of his rented truck. He also had homemade explosive devices in the truck, and had placed multiple coolers containing explosive devices around the French Quarter that were controlled by a remote detonator. Luckily the devices failed to explode, reportedly because Jabbar used the wrong kind of ignitor for the type of explosives that he used, but the explosives were strong enough to kill hundreds more had they actually gone off as intended. A search of both his home in Texas and the AirBnb he had rented in New Orleans turned up more bomb-making material, and Jabbar had apparently attempted to burn down the AirBnb after leaving to carry out his attack. There's still a lot to be uncovered about the attack, but from the beginning one thing that hasn't been in question has been the heroic actions of the New Orleans Police Department. Shortly after attack, webcam footage surfaced showing officers running down Bourbon Street towards the attack as soon as the call went out. https://twitter.com/EarthCam/status/1874958143123280287 Two NOPD officers were wounded during the shootout with Jabbar, but there's no doubt that they were able to save countless lives thanks to their quick response to eliminate the threat. And today, the NOPD released harrowing bodycam footage that shows the danger that those police officers faced. During a news conference, NOPD superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick identified the officers who shot the terrorist first time as Sergeant Nigel Daggs and Officers Christian Beyer and Jacobie Jordan. Jordan sustained a gunshot wound to the thigh, along with an additional officer, Joseph Rodrigue, who didn't open fire and also suffered a broken shoulder. All officers involved have been cleared to return to full duty after being assigned to administrative duties, which is routine after officer-involved shootings. Kirkpatrick called the officers "national heroes," and revealed that two of the four officers have been on the force for less than two years. In the video, you can see the suspect open fire on officers surrounding his truck from underneath the deployed airbag. The responding officers open fire as others run for cover, and you can see the pedestrians in the background also fleeing the scene. The shootout lasted only about 9 seconds before the terrorist was killed, which really speaks to the heroism of the NOPD, not only in preventing him from shooting innocent civilians but from also potentially reaching a remote detonator that could have set off the explosives and caused mass casualties throughout the busy French Quarter. Kirkpatrick did not reveal how many shots were believed to have been fired by Jabbar and how many were fired by NOPD, nor did she speak to any pedestrians who may have been caught in the crossfire and shot by either the terrorist or by officers returning fire. Regardless, after seeing the bodycam video, it's hard to describe the officers involved as anything but heroes who prevented a horrible situation from becoming much worse. https://twitter.com/news_fuentes/status/1877761720099238157
