Texas Voters In Dallas, Lockhart & Bastrop Vote “Yes” To Marijuana Decriminalization, & You Know Willie Nelson’s Got To Be Happy

A win for Willie Nelson's home state. Last night, the main focus of election coverage was on who would become the next President of the United States and on naming seats in the House and Senate. The news broke that Donald Trump won the election as Pennsylvania went red, showing that Kamala Harris and Tim Watlz could not make up enough votes to come back in the election. While that was the prime-time event of last night's election coverage, there were also issues on the state level that voters were hoping swayed their way, including the legalization or decriminalization of marijuana. And there is no better poster child than Willie Nelson to back these propositions. Three propositions asking voters to pass cannabis decriminalization measures were included in the Texas ballot: Dallas, Lockhart, and Bastrop. “Marijuana is an herb and a flower, not a crime. Proposition R in Dallas is about fairness and freedom. It’s long past time to end the criminalization of weed in Texas, and I’m proud to support Ground Game Texas in their efforts. As an avid pothead, Nelson attributes the herb to saving his life. In a 2019 interview with Rolling Stone, he claimed it saved his life. “I wouldn’t be alive. It saved my life, really. I wouldn’t have lived 85 years if I’d have kept drinking and smoking like I was when I was 30, 40 years old... I think that weed kept me from wanting to kill people. And probably kept a lot of people from wanting to kill me, too – out there drunk, running around.” As Nelson is a Texas resident who has been affected by the harsh laws against marijuana, this proposition is close to his heart, and today, he is victorious. While Nelson's presidential candidate might not be taking a seat in the Oval Office, I'm sure he's thrilled about these ballot measures. Dallas County's specific proposition decriminalizes less than 4 ounces of marijuana, which is honestly a hefty amount of weed.
