Celebrating like it's game day.
Of course, many Americans were glued to their TV screens last night, as votes rolling in, and still are in some states, with former President Donald Trump pretty handily beating his opponent, sitting Vice President Kamala Harris.
Donald Trump also won the popular vote of the United States, which marks the first time since 2004 that a Republican has done so.
Of course, many are celebrating this morning with the promise of a new administration taking over, and millions of others are disappointed in the fact that their candidate lost. Honestly, I'm just glad it's over, because I don't think I could've gotten through another day of endless TV ads, robo calls and mail flyers.
And down in Auburn, Alabama, football fans celebrated in a very Auburn way, by rolling Toomer's Corner in a time-honored tradition.
If you're unfamiliar, every time Auburn wins a football game, they head to the intersection of College Street and Magnolia Ave, and throw toilet paper all over the oak trees. It's the intersection that marks the transition from downtown Auburn to the university campus, hence the name Toomer's Corner.
It's
happened since the beginning of Auburn athletics, and certainly one of the more unique college football traditions. The name comes from Alabama State Senator "Shel" Toomer, where played on Auburn's first football team in 1892, and also founded Toomer's Drugs in 1896, which has existed on the as an Auburn landmark for over 130 years.
Apparently, the tradition began when the drug store had the only telegraph in the city, so during away football games employees of the store would get the first news of a win, so they would throw tape from it on power lines to signify to locals their team had won.
Unfortunately, the old Toomer's Oaks were removed in April of 2013 due to a poisoning incident after Iron Bowl in 2010, though new trees were planted and the tradition carried on.
Obviously, Alabama was called early on in the night last night, and is traditionally a deeply red state. The Southern state accounts for nine Electoral College votes, so fans headed out to Toomer's Corner to roll the trees and celebrate Donald Trump's victory.
A TikTok video online shows the tress absolutely covered in toilet paper, with fans out in full force like they just beat Alabama in the SEC championship game.
One person used their classic game day line "War Eagle" and changed it to:
"War Damn President."
There were even Alabama fans chiming in down in the comments section, saying they can't believe they were siding with Auburn fans, but they were happy to in this case:
"The Trump effect, getting Alabama fans and Auburn fans together in NOVEMBER!"
"I'm a die hard Alabama fan and I approve this message. TRUMP 2024 🇺🇸❤️🇺🇸❤️"
"This Alabama fan supports this! 😂😂😂"
"The only time Alabama and Auburn fans come together!"
"Only time Bama fans wanted to see auburn fans celebrate."
"For an Alabama fan I can get behind this war Damn President!"
"I’m a diehard lifelong Georgia fan and I absolutely LOVE this!!! Well done, Auburn Tigers!!"
"Never been prouder to be an auburn fan."
"Yessssss!!!! I love this!!! ...and I'm an Alabama fan."
"Bama and Auburn fans agree on something!!"
Honestly, I had no idea that there was anything that could bring these two fan bases together, but here we are... never thought I'd see the day.
