![Kevin Costner yellowstone]()
So you're telling me there's a chance?
The will-he, won't-he dance surrounding
Yellowstone and
Kevin Costner has gone on for quite some time now. Costner, who plays (or maybe it would be more appropriate to say "played") the titular character John Dutton, has not been confirmed to return for the back half of the show's final season.
Season five's final episodes have been delayed since 2023 when production was halted due to the simultaneous writers and actors strikes. The first half of the fifth season aired in the Fall of 2o23, and loyal fans have been waiting ever since then for the storyline to come to a conclusion. Those who watch the hit show rejoiced when it was announced back in May that
filming had resumed on the show's final episodes.
There's just one issue- there's no Kevin Costner. The man who plays John Dutton allegedly
offered up a time frame for him to return to the show so his character's arc could be closed, but that reportedly didn't work out. There have even been some rumors that Costner wouldn't return at all, but the actor seemed to keep the door cracked open for John Dutton in an interview this morning on
Today.
While Costner was there, he discussed everything from his new
Horizon: An American Saga project to his family. But Savannah Guthrie did the Lord's work when she asked him about the whole
Yellowstone situation, and here's what he had to say:
"Number one, I did it for five years. And I want to work more than once a year. We lost an entire year at one point and I thought, 'Well that can't ever happen again.' It was well over a year. I just had to be in position to make the things. Really... there's a chance to make both of them.
Material has to be ready at certain times, and we weren't able to do that. And after five years, I thought, 'I'm just not going to do this.' If we can get that, if we can do that, then I'll do it."
Sounds somewhat promising, right?
If Taylor Sheridan and the rest of his team can get things straightened out (at least according to Costner, get him a script), it seems as though John Dutton could swoop in and finish out the western story that has pretty much revolved around him. However... with them beginning production in Montana already this year, I'm not exactly optimistic.
As the 69-year-old actor went on to say, Yellowstone means a lot to him, and he'd love to help bring it to a close:
"I took it over when no one had seen it and told people I thought it was going to be pretty good. I've supported that thing and I've loved it. It's been really important to me. I would love to go back under the right circumstances. I think that's (what) all of us want, right? At this point, for me, it really has to be the right circumstances. There's always a chance. I love the thing."
And a lot of other people love the thing too. You can hear more from Costner in the interview below:
