Jacksonville Jaguars rookie Travis Hunter has the approval of… a kind lady he sat next to on an airplane.
Throughout the NFL Draft process, teams are always trying to evaluate a potential player’s skillset. Could their game translate to the next level? Could they contribute immediately to the success of the franchise, or are they more of a project that needs to develop behind some other pros for a bit?
Travis Hunter is one of the more interesting prospects in recent memory to come out of the college ranks, mainly because he played both sides of the ball (offense and defense) as a Colorado Buffalo. He apparently did so much in his couple of years in college – boasting a stellar 13-12 record – that he got his jersey retired back in April, along with his college teammate Shedeur Sanders.
Do I really need to get into anything about Sanders’ precipitous fall in this years NFL Draft? You’ve heard enough about that? Cool cool cool… we’ll move on.
Someone that didn’t have to wait very long to hear his name called during the draft was Hunter, who was chosen by the Jacksonville Jaguars with the No. 2 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. Personally, I think that’s the perfect spot for him to go, considering he’s a two-way player.
And it’ll be exciting to see if he continues to play both offense and defense in the NFL. Regardless, there’s no doubt that he would be able to handle both. Why do I say that? Well, he graduated with his degree from Colorado a couple of days ago, and was a two-time first-team academic All-American during his time there… while he also knew every offensive and defensive play.
So if there’s no doubt about his skills on the field, what about how Travis Hunter carries himself off the field?
We might have gotten the truest insight into the young superstar’s personality thanks to a random woman by the name of Sandy Hawkins Combs. She apparently got seated next to Hunter on a recent United Airlines flight, and had no idea who he was, yet she was thoroughly impressed by the person that she interacted with.
I’ll let her tell the story:
“I had the most wonderful flight home from Denver. I met the nicest young man who sat next to me. He offered to put my bag in the overhead compartment and helped me with my tray. He was always polite, saying ‘Yes ma’am’ or ‘No ma’am.’ Anyone would be proud to have him as a son or grandson – so polite.”
I think this should be a new area of NFL Draft analysis.
Sure, “John Doe” ran a fast 40-yard dash at the combine, but how did he perform in his AMSPT (Airplane Middle Seat Personality Test)? I’ve got a feeling that’s how we’ll be able to differentiate the real, future NFL stars from the busts…
