Never hurts to have the president on your side.
Colorado Buffaloes quarterback Shedeur Sanders had to sit through an unprecedented slide during the NFL Draft before ultimately being selected in the fifth round by the Cleveland Browns.
Despite only leading the Buffaloes to a 13-11 in his two seasons at the helm, many saw his skillset and potential to be very alluring for NFL teams in need of a quarterback, and at one point Sanders was projected to be a top-5 draft pick with teams like the Tennessee Titans, the Las Vegas Raiders, the New York Giants, the New Orleans Saints and the Pittsburgh Steelers all in the market for a new quarterback.
But the son of Colorado Buffaloes coach and NFL legend Deion Sanders seemed to see his draft stock drop after the NFL Combine, when Sanders declined to throw and there were rumors that coaches saw him as “arrogant” and unprofessional during his interviews with teams.
One anonymous assistant coach even reportedly said that his interview with the team was the worst he’s ever seen:
“He’s so entitled. He takes unnecessary sacks. He never plays on time. He has horrible body language. He blames teammates. … But the biggest thing is, he’s not that good.”
So it wasn’t a total surprise when he dropped out of the first round. But when he went undrafted on Saturday in rounds 2 and 3, all eyes were on Sanders and what went wrong.
In fact, Sanders had to wait until the final day of the draft to learn his landing spot, when he was eventually taken by the Cleveland Browns with a 5th round pick at #144 overall. It was an unprecedented slide for someone who was once projected to be a top 5 pick, and thought to be a second round pick at worst heading into draft day.
Throughout the draft, ESPN analyst Mel Kiper Jr. pretty much had an aneurysm watching Sanders fall, and wouldn’t stop talking about him every time a team DIDN’T draft him. But Kiper wasn’t the only one on the Shedeur Sanders bandwagon.
After the quarterback fell out of the first round, President Donald Trump took to social media to give his opinion on the draft and question what NFL owners were thinking when they passed on Sanders:
“What is wrong with NFL owners, are they STUPID? Deion Sanders was a great college football player, and was even greater in the NFL. He’s also a very good coach, streetwise and smart! Therefore, Shedeur, his quarterback son, has PHENOMENAL GENES, and is all set for Greatness. He should be “picked” IMMEDIATELY by a team that wants to WIN. Good luck Shedeur, and say hello to your wonderful father!”
It was an unexpected endorsement from POTUS, and ultimately it didn’t make much of a difference because it would still be another 4 rounds after Trump’s post before Sanders heard his name called. But Sanders appreciated the support from the president nonetheless.
During an interview after the Cleveland Browns rookie mini-camp today, Sanders was asked about the endorsement from Trump:
“I was truly thankful. I was truly thankful for it. Including him there was a lot of fans, a lot of people in barber shops, a lot of hairstylists, there was a lot of just fans of me and of my craft and of my family that was there to support. So I was just thankful that I have that foundation overall, just as people and we all could come together as one.”
Kinda weird answer if I’m being honest. The two groups that you mentioned supporting you, along with the president, are hairstylists and people in barber shops? Is that where Sanders has the most fans or something? Not real sure what that meant, but there’s no doubt he appreciated the support from Trump…and the hairstylists, of course.
