Okay, in his defense, it really was in style back then… but personally, I think it’s one of those things that should probably just stay in the past. Kind of “Backstreet Boy chic,” if you will…
Dale Earnhardt Jr. and his wife, Amy, recently launched a new podcast called Bless Your Hardt as part of his Dirty Mo Media empire, and it’s definitely a neat look into their marriage and personal life, where they tell lots of great stories and even some secrets on each other.
And with Darlington Throwback week coming up this week in the NASCAR schedule, a fan asked what Amy thinks about her husband’s old hairstyle, when he was rocking the frosted tips int he early-to-mid 2000’s and it really became his signature look for a while.
He certainly wasn’t the only guy who jumped in on the trend, and I don’t judge him at all for getting his hair colored, but the whole frosted tip thing is just such a funny trend to look back on if you were alive during the height of boy bands and all the guys who used to have their hair like this… if you know, you just know, and Amy had a great response, saying that guys that had that haircut were “a little silly,” and she doesn’t even really see her husband as the same person:
“So it’s funny, it feels like that’s a totally different human being that existed back then, because the version of Dale that was then is definitely not the version of Dale I have now. I think any guy that frosted their hair was a little silly, I can’t imagine him doing that to be honest, which is why I feel like it’s a totally different guy.
But I have to schedule his haircuts now or he refuses to even go, but back then, he was going regularly to get his tips frosted, you know what I mean? They pulled it through the cap, didn’t they?”
Dale Jr. recalled how painful it was, because they used to use these caps with tons of little holes, pull your hair through with a crotchet needle and then color it. I’ve never had my hair highlighted that way, but it doesn’t sound all that pleasant, but beauty is pain:
“It was painful… the put the cap on, then they’d poke in their, then pull your hair out. and they’d always poke you. They don’t have to hurt you…”
Amy assured him that they don’t do that anymore, but I don’t think he’ll ever have to worry about highlights either way again:
“Yeah, they don’t use those anymore. It is painful.”
It sounds like Jr. is perfectly fine leaving the frosted tips in the past…

And speaking of early 2000’s nostalgia, Dale Jr.’s MTV Cribs episode is top tier:
