Something all Americans can get behind, regardless of political party.
For years, Live Nation and Ticketmaster have made the ticket buying experience one full of dread and an inordinate amount of additional fees. It’s no secret that the ticket market for live events is all the way corrupt. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve gone to buy a $45 ticket and when I go to checkout, it’s $145 after all of the services fees and transaction fees are tacked on.
There has long been a call for Ticketmaster, which is under the Live Nation Entertainment umbrella, to change their ways and do something about the excessive prices. It’s a very complicated issue, and in short, the problem is that ticket sales are intertwined with booking and management and venues and promoters, which we broke down in way more detail here.
But hopefully things in the ticketing industry will improve sooner rather than later, because President Donald Trump just signed an executive order that is setting out to end the price gouging of middlemen in the entertainment industry. Translation: Trump heard all of the cries that tickets to concerts and sporting events were getting out of control (price wise), and he’s doing his best to stop it.
And hey, if this works… it could be an executive order for all time.
Donald Trump has been singing executive orders like nobody’s business since he took office (107 and counting). I’m happy to hear that he’s combating the ticketing monopoly, and it officially checks a personal box of mine on my “Trump To-Do Wishlist.” (Another big one was hoping the POTUS would sign an EO banning Daylight Savings Time, but it doesn’t look like he’ll be doing that).
Sources told TMZ that this most recent executive order will direct the Federal Trade Commission to work in tandem with the U.S. Attorney General to positively “ensure competition laws are being enforced, and to enforce the BOTS Act to stop scalpers from using bots to buy up all the inventory and re-sell tickets at a huge markup.” It’s rumored that the Secretary of the Treasury and the Department of Justice will be involved.
If you’ve ever tried to snag tickets to your favorite artist as soon as they become available, you know how frustrating the bots can be. But hopefully that problem will soon be eradicated, and we could all have President Donald Trump to thank.
In terms of signing executive orders that really get the people going, this one might take the cake… and the Commander in Chief called in a good friend to help make it a memorable moment: Kid Rock.
It’s an issue that’s long been a priority for Kid Rock, who recently also met with Attorney General Pam Bondi to discuss how to improve the ticket buying experience:
“What a treat to break bread with our soon to be Attorney General Pam Bondi.
I look forward to working with her and the whole administration to help fix the fiasco of buying concert tickets. Gonna open a can of whoop ass on the bots, scalpers, venues, ticketing companies, managers and artists alike who rip off and deceive the public with the horse shit that has gone on for decades and only gotten worse.
Whoever in charge that wants to help fix this, get your ass to the table, otherwise, Fuck Around and Find Out.”
And let’s be honest: The visual of Kid Rock in the Oval Office is magnificent. Kid Rock appears to have chosen the most patriotic piece of clothing out of his closet, and seeing President Trump give the floor to him before he officially signs his executive order is… absurdly awesome. The “All Summer Long” singer made some incredible points too, and it’s cool to see that an artist like himself is doing everything he can to support lower ticket prices.
And that President Trump also cares enough about it to sign an executive order directly combating the issue:
“This is a great first step.”
