Is that a flashlight in your pocket officer, or are you just happy to see me?
I love a good office prank as much as anybody. Unfortunately all of us here at Whiskey Riff work remotely, but if we had an actual office, I can pretty much guarantee that my friend and coworker Quinn would come into the office to find an air horn taped under his chair at some point. Just some good harmless fun.
But this police chief may have taken the office pranks a little too far.
Robert Farley, the chief of police in North Bergen, New Jersey, is being sued by several of his officers over allegations that his pranks went too far and created a toxic work environment.
According to the filings, apparently one of Farley’s favorite “pranks” involved pooping…well, pretty much anywhere he wasn’t supposed to, including in the upper tank of the toilet (I think kids these days call that an “upper decker”), in the trash can, or on the floor around the office.
But that’s not even the worst of the chief’s hijinx.
Farley would allegedly spike the office coffee pot with Viagra or Adderall, and was also fond of shaving his body on his fellow officers’ desks. And in one particularly disturbing incident, the chief reportedly chased an officer around the office with a needle before cornering him and stabbing him in the penis.
Guy was absolutely unhinged.
At one point, Farley allegedly microwaved a cup of hot sauce that created “pepper spray-like fumes” that filled the building and forced the fire department and EMS to respond to clear the vents.
But his pranks didn’t stop at the office: Farley also allegedly sent dildos, lube, and gay pride flags to one officer at his home, which the officer says caused him embarrassment with his wife and children.
In addition to the hostile work environment, the officers are claiming that Farley retaliated against them by refusing to give them promotions, and assigned them to unfavorable shifts.
Meanwhile, the township is standing by the embattled police chief, who has been on the job since February 2024 after 20 years with the department:
“The Township of North Bergen has full confidence in Chief Robert Farley’s leadership.”
And they also claim that the lawsuit is a result of a group of disgruntled officers who are upset over Farley cracking down on overtime in the department:
“When Chief Farley took office last year he undertook an initiative to reduce the amount of police overtime expenditures and create a more fair and equitable process for how extra duty detail assignments are distributed amongst officers. Those reforms have led to a reduction in overtime spending of approximately $1 million per year.
They have also significantly reduced the amount of extra compensation made by several officers, including Lt. Guzman who made over $150,000 in overtime and extra duty work in 2023, and SLEO Derin whose additional compensation has been cut in half due to Chief Farley’s reforms.
It’s highly suspicious that these allegations have only come to light after Chief Farley instituted these reforms, which were designed to protect North Bergen taxpayers and ensure that all officers have access to extra duty assignments.”
Now, like I said, I’m as big a fan of office pranks as anybody. But if these allegations are true, it seems that maybe the chief went just a LITTLE too far – regardless of whether the officers are upset over having their overtime hours cut back.
