Penn State Baseball Fans Are Putting Up Legendary Hot Dog Eating Numbers

WE ARE… crushing glizzies…

Baseball season is in full swing and that’s good for all Americans, even the haters and losers that constantly throw shade at our national pastime.

MLB’s Opening Day was yesterday and my Philadelphia Phillies are already in sole possession of the NL East, something I’m hoping to be able to say for the remainder of the year (but knowing how my team’s love to hate me, I’m sure I won’t be able to say it much longer).

While the games themselves were pretty good yesterday (apart from the Angels already using a position player on the mound) broadcasting of the games left much to be desired. MLB.TV, a league sponsored streaming service that allows you to watch pretty much every game as long as you’re not in a blackout zone, completely crashed for a good portion of the day, meaning many fans (myself included) missed the first pitch of their team’s season. To make matters worse, literally nothing has been said about the outage… Not a “We’re sorry for the technical difficulties”, not a “we’ve taken steps to ensure it won’t happen again”, literally nothing, proving once again that the league, at the end of the day, is only out for money and doesn’t give two sh*ts about the fan experience, even though without fans they have no money.

Apart from the big leagues, college and high school seasons are also well underway and there’s a story coming out of Penn State that’s too good not to bring to attention.

Penn State Fans Love A Hot Dog (Or Three)

The Nittany Lions play their home games at Medlar Field (which is nearly identical to PNC Park, home of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Only the right field wall height is different, 21 feet at PNC and 18.55 feet at Medlar in honor of PSU’s founding year) and one of the promotions to get fans in the stands is Dollar Dog Night every Tuesday home game.

As someone who’s experienced Dollar Dog Nights (albeit not at Penn State) and the rabidity of Nittany Lion fans I can tell you first-hand: It has to be quite the experience.

So far, Penn State has had 3 Dollar Dog nights and the numbers these fans are putting up in the hot dog consumption department are truly astonishing.

Here’s the results of each Dollar Dog Night so far… Not the final score but the attendance and total number of hot dogs eaten:

March 5 – Attendance: 4,049, Hot Dogs Consumed: 5,960, Hot Dogs per Fan: 1.47

March 18 – Attendance: 3,754, Hot Dogs Consumed: 7,506, Hot Dogs per Fan: 2.00 (actually 1.9994)

March 25 – Attendance: 2,822, Hot Dogs Consumed: 6,733, Hot Dogs per Fan: 2.39

Grand Totals – Attendance: 10,625, Hot Dogs Consumed: 20,199, Hot Dogs per Fan: 1.90

In just three Dollar Dog Nights, over 20 thousand hot dogs have been eaten, I mean how does the food service even prepare for that type of volume? Truly, these are some record book numbers I would think but hey, if anyone knows of a place that sells more hot dogs per capita please let me know because these are the public interest stories I care most about.

Also, it’s a pretty safe assumption that not every person eats a hot dog at each game, meaning there’s a core group of people out there putting up some significant individual stats… Admittedly I’ve eaten 9 glizzies during the course of a 9 inning baseball game (It’s awful. I do not recommend trying the 9-9-9 challenge) and if you get a group of frat guys a few beers deep rolling up to a dollar dog stand, well, it’s safe to assume they’ll be picking up the slack for the grandparents there to watch their son warm up the left fielder…

There’s three Dollar Dog Nights remaining and I’ll be paying close attention. The average amount of hot dogs eaten per fan has increased substantially in each game so far. Were this pace to continue we could expect the average fan to put down 3.77 hot dogs on April 22nd versus West Virginia (whose Governor just got called out for his weight by RFK Jr.), so while I was going to say this pace seems unsustainable, if there’s one school that can probably help the cause it’s West Virginia…

You don’t get stories like these in professional sports, just another reason that college is the absolute best.
