That’s one expensive hat.
Contrary to popular belief, cowboy hats, especially felt hats, are not the cheapest accessory on the market. If you want to sport a cowboy hat, a wool felt is much more friendly on your wallet, but if you want to invest in a high-quality fur felt hat, then get ready to open your wallet. Of course, you don’t have to spend hundreds or thousands of dollars on a hat, and retailers like Cavender’s and Boot Barn have plenty of affordable options, but if you want to shop for a high-quality hat that can be passed down from generation to generation, you’re looking at a fur felt hat.
When shopping for a fur felt hat, you will often see beaver fur being used for the felt, as it’s durable, waterproof, and will last through the test of time. As you shop, you might notice that hats have an “x” number associated with them, which denotes the percentage of beaver fur in the hat. The higher the value, the greater the proportion of beaver fur. The higher the number in front of the hats, the tighter and more durable the felt is, which means a longer-lasting hat.
My wallet hurt when I got my American 10x hat, so even thinking about getting a 100x hat hurts. While some folks are willing to shell out that kind of money for a hat, others are not. An El Paso, Texas, Western wear store, called Starr Western Wear, is currently getting some heat for showing off its most expensive hat.
The store featured a 1000x Stetson El Diamante. The man handling the hat noted it’s the most expensive hat in the world, but I am sure that some folks will fire off that there is a more expensive one. However, after doing some research, there is no doubt that it is one of the most expensive hats readily available on the market—and it’s Stetson’s most expensive hat.
So what makes this hat so expensive?
The buckle featured on the hat’s band is pure gold and crested in diamonds. The felt is 100% pure beaver, and the interior of the hat is lined with a lamb skin sweatband.

It’s a stunning hat, without a doubt. While some people watched this video and admired the beauty and craftsmanship that went into crafting it, other viewers quickly hit the comments section to shame anyone who would shell out this much on a hat.
I can’t imagine shelling out that much on a hat. However, I can see the appeal if you wear one daily or collect hats. However, there was quite a bit of hate on the video toward any cowboys who would spend this much on a hat. It’s not a ranch hand cowboy spending this much on a work hat, but if you’re a rodeo professional, I could see someone sporting this, and that does not make them any less of a cowboy.
If you saw someone sporting this hat, would you even know how much it cost them? Some people just have to hate on everything…
Check out some of the commentary.
“Nope, I’d rather stick to my American felt hat.”
“Got me a nice $65 hat at Boot Barn.”
“I see someone with that $7,000 I’ll laugh in his face cause that ain’t no cowboy.”
“I’d say that’s for people who play dress up.”
“Why…”
“Damn I thought paying $340 for a Stetson Skyline was expensive.”
“American all day. No comparison.”
“A $50.00 hat will do all the same work.”
“I’ll just stick with my $86 hat lol thanks.”
“I am real cowboy.”
“Idk about all that, looks like a 300 dollar hat to me.”
“Nope.”
If this hat really speaks to you and you’re looking to pinch a few pennies, this hat is listed for $5,600 on Stetson’s website… just helping the people out.
