Ryan Reynolds Uses Opening Day To Promote His Gin Brand, & It’s Hard To Tell If It’s Funny Or Cringey

How do we feel about Ryan Reynolds?

The Canadian actor burst into Hollywood with films like National Lampoon’s Van Wilder, and the timeless rom-com The Proposal where he starred opposite Sandra Bullock. In more recent years, he’s been more associated with his beloved Deadpool super hero films, and quick, quippy advertisements for the many brands he’s involved with.

Just to do somewhat of a head count, Reynolds either own or co-owns these organizations:

-Wrexham FC (Welsh football club)

-Mint Mobile

-Maximum Effort (film production and digital marketing)

-Alpine F1

-Aviation American Gin

There are actually some other companies that Ryan Reynolds owns/works with, but I feel like we covered most of the bases with that list. And speaking of bases… today marks the first day of the 2025 MLB season. I know I’m excited to watch my favorite team play 162 games (sometimes I feel as though that’s not enough games), and Ryan Reynolds took the Opening Day opportunity to promote the gin brand that he owns a stake of.

And to do so, Ryan Reynolds leaned on his patented humor and wit – as well as Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Bryan Reynolds. Ryan Reynolds and Bryan Reynolds… makes a lot of sense right? The video below opens up with the movie star explaining that he really does love baseball and calls upon Bryan Reynolds to prove it.

There’s also a purposeful misspelling of “Opening Day” as the clip’s caption, and I’ll let you figure that one out on your own:

Not a bad way to seize the day and promote Aviation Gin… but is it funny?

There are parts of me that does think this was a “home run” since we’re talking baseball. I’m typically a fan of Ryan Reynolds and the things he’s involved in (LOVE the Deadpool trilogy), and this idea was somewhat self deprecating, as the movie star insisted that he really did enjoy baseball… but did nothing to prove that he knew anything about it.

Obviously that was done intentionally, and some people on social media loved it:

On the other hand, there’s definitely a population out there that has tired of Ryan Reynold’s shtick. And that’s understandable. Reynolds would probably tell you himself that his lane of comedy can get repetitive, but the weird thing is that… some people really don’t like him.

Those type of people left comments like this one:

And I’d also be remiss if I didn’t mention the backlash that Reynolds and his wife – Blake Lively – have been facing amidst a strange and somewhat questionable lawsuit against actor Justin Baldoni. It all revolves around some sexual harassment claims that may or may not have happened during the filming of It Ends With Us.

I won’t get too into the weeds with that, but the whole ordeal – which has involved Lively and Reynolds and hasn’t exactly painted them in a flattering light – has soured a lot of people on the formerly popular celebrity couple:

Classic internet though, right? Someone posts something that’s supposed to be lighthearted and funny, and it draws all kinds of different reactions…
