“How’s Fang Fang?” – Congressman Reminded That He Had A Relationship With A Chinese Spy After Calling For Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth To Resign Over Signal Group Chat

Maybe best to sit this one out…

By now you’ve no doubt heard about the latest controversy brewing in Washington, DC after Jeffrey Goldberg, editor of The Atlantic magazine, was mistakenly added to a group chat on the messaging app Signal along with Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, National Security Advisor Mike Waltz, and others discussing plans to launch airstrikes on Houthi militants in Yemen.

Waltz has taken responsibility for the mistake, while Hegseth has maintained that no classified information was compromised or discussed in the group chat, which largely discussed the pros and cons of proceeding with the strike or holding off for another 30 days.ha

Earlier today, Hegseth dismissed the characterizations of the messages as “war plans.”

“So, let’s me get this straight. The Atlantic released the so-called “war plans” and those “plans” include: No names. No targets. No locations. No units. No routes. No sources. No methods. And no classified information.

Those are some really shitty war plans.

This only proves one thing: Jeff Goldberg has never seen a war plan or an “attack plan” (as he now calls it). Not even close.”

President Donald Trump has publicly supported his administration members, acknowledging that it was a mistake and that somebody screwed up but resisting calls from Democrats to fire Waltz or Hegseth. But Democrats have pounced on the slip up to demand that the two resign, insisting that the mistaken messages compromised national security.

One of those Democrats who has been outspoken with his calls for Hegseth to resign is Congressman Eric Swalwell, who has represented California in the House of Representatives since 2013.

In a series of tweets yesterday, Swalwell questioned why Hegseth had not yet been fired:

But folks over on Twitter were quick to point out that Swalwell might not be the most qualified Congressman to accuse others of jeopardizing national security…

Back in 2020, it was reported that Swalwell had been in close contact with a Chinese spy named Fang Fang, who had been trying to form relationships with California politicians who the Chinese government believed could be assets in national roles. Fang Fang had reportedly helped fundraise for Swalwell during his congressional campaign, and had helped place interns in his office.

It was also reported that the spy had a sexual relationship with several politicians, though Swalwell wasn’t specifically named. Still, the allegations were serious enough that then-Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy removed Swalwell from the House Intelligence Committee in 2023, after Speaker Nancy Pelosi declined to do so in 2021.

And given the fact that he was swindled by a Chinese spy, folks online don’t think he’s in any position to be criticizing others when it comes to national security:

Yeah, maybe Swalwell should sit this one out…
