Viral ‘American Idol’ Contestant Doug Kiker (The Rascal Flatts Singing Garbage Man) Dead At 32

Some sad news out of the American Idol world.

The long-running singing competition show has always been great at turning everyday people into instant stars. Not everyone gets to be named the winner at the end of the season, but a lot of people are given a boost in their life and/or career after they are featured on the show. That was definitely the case for Doug Kiker.

Kiker stole America’s heart and became known as the “Singing Garbage Man” during Season 18 of American Idol. Kiker told his story, revealed to the judges that he made a living as a garbage man (and his only performing experience was from the back of the garbage truck), and then blew the judges away with a brief-yet-impressive performance of Rascal Flatts’ “Bless the Broken Road.” It was such a stellar showing that Lionel Richie, Luke Bryan and Katy Perry didn’t need to see much, and the “Firework” singer was even brought to tears.

In my humble opinion, it’s one of the best moments in the history of the show:

Kiker was one of Season 18’s best stories, even though he was eliminated in the following round after he sang Marvin Gaye’s “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough.”

Sadly, it’s been reported that Doug Kiker passed away this past Monday. The singer’s ex-fiancée, Valerie Cook, told TMZ that the “Singing Garbage Man” had died, and that she was heartbroken that her kids had lost their father. As for Kiker’s cause of death, that has yet to be revealed.

William, the brother of Doug Kiker, shared this message on Facebook bout the passing of his younger brother:

“Dear brother… I just want you to know that no matter where you are, you will always be my baby brother. I know you are finally at peace. I just wish I had more time with you. So until I can see you again, say hey to bubba for me and tell him I love him. Rest in peace Douglas Kiker…my baby brother.”

And Doug’s sister, Angela Evans, shared that the family was scrambling a bit because Kiker’s death was unexpected:

“This was completely unexpected we are completely unprepared and are gonna need a little help getting him home from Denver, Colorado and being able to give the memorial that not only he, but anyone deserves…

Thank you for the continued prayers at this very difficult time. Lord knows we have been through so much these past few years. Douglas Kiker, you will live forever in our hearts. I miss you so.”

A GoFundMe has been organized to help the Kiker family transport Doug back home and provide him a worthy memorial service. The page’s description reads:

“Help us lay our loved one to rest. It is with heavy hearts that we have to say goodbye to one of the most sincere souls and most hilarious person of all. Douglas, a beloved son, brother, father and friend.”

We lost the “Singing Garbage Man” way too soon. Doug Kiker was only 32-years old… RIP.
