Gotta keep your head on a swivel when you’re out having a good time.
Of course that’s true in any big city, or really anywhere, but over the past few weeks several warnings have gone viral after reported cases of drink spiking on Broadway in downtown Nashville.
Unfortunately this isn’t a new issue for Broadway, which has a ton of bars packed into a few blocks and is filled every night with tourists in an unfamiliar city who pack the bars to drink and party. It seems like every year there’s a surge in warnings from people who have been drugged while they were partying in Nashville, it gets some attention for a little while, and then it goes away.
Last year it became a major topic of conversation during the search for Riley Strain, the Missouri college student who disappeared from Broadway and was missing for two weeks before his body was found in the river near downtown Nashville. There was plenty of speculation at the time that he may have been drugged, and several people shared their stories of being roofied while they were partying on Broadway, but ultimately it was determined that no roofies were found in his system and there was no indication that he had been drugged before his disappearance.
But recently, many stories have gone viral on social media warning people of drink spiking that’s happening on Broadway and at other bars around Nashville.
@carolineklasing This happened about three years ago and now it’s even more common :/ #nashville #fyp #storytime #beaware
@lawreneash PSA: dont be fooled by all the glamourous videos of Nashville This city that I love isnt safe for men or women when it comes to drinking downtown. Getting drugged can happen to ANYONE!! Just take percautions and try to stay safe out there! Image may be NSFW.

One viral video claims that there were 40 cases of people who were treated for drink spiking at Vanderbilt University hospital last weekend alone:

And after several stories were shared on Reddit and Facebook about victims of drink spiking in Nashville, several posts have gone viral sharing tips for being safe while going out in Nashville.
The Metro Nashville Police Department issued a warning with safety tips including knowing your limits and taking common sense steps like watching your drinks and not taking drinks from strangers.

And a post on Reddit from a woman who says she works security at various bars downtown also shared some tips for visitors, like taking photos with your friends before you go out so that it’s easier for someone to help you find them, keeping an eye on your drink, and using drink covers.
One of those makers of drink covers, Nightcap, recently visited several Nashville bars to hand out their product to customers and offer them to bars. But the founder of the company says that she went door to door to the bars showing them her product, and the only one that responded after following up told her they weren’t interested. (She didn’t name any of the bars, but obviously that’s still concerning).
She also had a message for those who are going out partying on Broadway:
“They all knew that drink spiking’s going on. They acknowledged it… We are up against the hospitality groups. We need to start taking safety into our own hands.”

And like I said, this obviously isn’t just a problem in Nashville. But as the weather gets warmer and the number of visitors to Broadway starts to increase, we’re unfortunately going to see more cases of people downtown just trying to take advantage of vulnerable visitors who are only looking to have a good time.
