Probably should have scrubbed his Twitter before that one.
California Governor Gavin Newsom seems to be trying to set himself up as the leader of the Democrat party after Kamala Harris’ loss in the 2024 election left Dems without a clear frontrunner to serve as the voice of the party and the presumptive nominee for 2028.
Newsom is often mentioned as a potential presidential candidate, despite the fact that his state has the highest tax rate by far, the second-highest unemployment percentage, and the highest rate of residents leaving the state in the country. But sure, give the guy a promotion.
It seems that he’s trying to make a move toward the middle ahead of his expected presidential run, and part of that has been speaking with right-leaning media.
The governor recently drew criticism from his own side for appearing on a podcast with GOP influencer Charlie Kirk, a conversation that included Newsom splitting with his own party on transgender athletes and the issue of biological men in women’s sports:
“I think it’s an issue of fairness, I completely agree with you. It is deeply unfair… That’s easy to call out, the unfairness of that.”
Seems like somebody saw the polls and the election results and realized they were on the wrong side of the issue…but maybe I’m just being cynical. (I’m not, he’s a hypocrite).
Anyway, something else Newsom appeared to split with his own party on is their use of the word “Latinx” to describe Latin American populations. The term “Latinx” became popular among liberal white folks as a gender-neutral word for Latino and Latina individuals, but there was a problem: Actual Latin Americans hated it.
It was pretty much just a buzzword for the left to signal to others how progressive they were, but a 2023 poll found that 75% of Hispanic or Latin American voters said the word shouldn’t be used, with 36% saying that it was a negative word.
And they wonder why Donald Trump gained ground with Hispanic voters in the 2024 election.
Well during his podcast with Kirk, Newsom attempted to distance himself from the word “Latinx” and claimed that it wasn’t in his vocabulary:
“The Latinx stuff that, by the way, not one person ever in my office has ever used the word Latinx. Where did that even come from? Was it the pronouns?”
But unfortunately, Twitter keeps receipts – and quickly pulled up a post from Newsom from 2020 claiming that COVID disproportionately impacts the “Latinx” community.
#COVID19 disproportionately impacts the Latinx community.
Rising rates in the Central Valley are concerning. CA is making $52M available to increase testing, contact tracing and quarantine efforts, and sending strike teams to 4 counties with increased cases and hospitalizations.

Now, even if Newsom didn’t write the tweet himself, SOMEBODY in his office did. Are we to believe that this one tweet is the ONLY time somebody who works for Newsom has used the word “Latinx?”
BUT WAIT, there’s more: Not only did Newsom use the word on his personal account, Twitter found at least three instances of the official California governor account using “Latinx” to describe Hispanics and Latin Americans.
If Gavin's lips are moving, he's lying. Full search of him/his staff using Latinx on his X account: https://t.co/rkQOZL4O5s https://t.co/1pXKaNYSvJ pic.twitter.com/iGd33Pc0yF

And he also blasted Republicans for “banning the word Latinx.”
The @GOP are busy banning the word “Latinx” and AP black history courses rather than the weapons of war that are killing our kids.

Come on Gavin, voters aren’t that dumb. And Twitter quickly let him hear about it.

On his new podcast, @GavinNewsom is distancing himself from the made-up word “Latinx.”
Let’s take a look at his official state website, shall we?

Seems like this whole trying to position himself as a moderate is off to a rough start…thanks to things like his own words from the past.
