Angel Reese Gets Roasted For Threatening To Sit Out If WNBA Doesn’t Pay Up In Next CBA: “Zero People Will Care”

I’m not gonna lie… Angel Reese is the ultimate WNBA heel. And I mean that as a compliment. She’s sort of the unofficial “bad girl” of the WNBA, always mouthing off, always making headlines, adding some controversy to the sport that is largely ignored by the general public… it’s good for the WNBA to be honest.

Of course, her rivalry with the face of the league, Caitlin Clark, is well-documented, and goes back to their college days at LSU and Iowa, but Angel stepping in to fill that “villain role,” whether she intends to or not, often creates some much needed drama and attention. The only problem is that she’s always on the fence about how much she wants to embrace it.

Angel often complains about being the villain, but then embraces it, but then says she’s judged harder then her peers, but then welcomes the hate, then says she is over sexualized by fans and the media, but then dresses like this:

Just go full heel, Angel… steer into it, embrace it. Be the “bad girl” who dominates on the boards (and then maybe practice finishing at the rim).

We all know that the WNBA was largely irrelevant before her and Caitlin Clark burst into the league last season, and of course, Caitlin draws a crowd unlike anyone in the sport ever has, but if they want to continue to the grow the sport, and actually try and turn it unto a profitable enterprise, they need get some asses in the seats… and they’re not going to do that on just going out there and playing ball with an inferior product to the NBA (and the NBA isn’t much to write home about these days either).

And I might sound harsh, but I want the WNBA to succeed. I really do. I have a young daughter, and I want her to have role models in the sports world someday when she’s old enough to really watch and play sports, whatever sports that may be (dad’s not 6’5″ so I’m not sure if basketball is in the cards either way). Maybe I can get her into professional bass fishing? I digress…

Anyways back to Angel Reese….  the Chicago Sky star hosted Dallas Wings guard DiJonai Carrington on her podcast, which is appropriately named Unapologetically Angel, and the two got to talking about the current CBA ending at the end of this upcoming season. The players opted out of the current CBA, which was set to expire in 2027, and are set to play the 2025 season under the current CBA rules. But a new agreement has to be in place before the next season after this upcoming one… and with the way the league has grown (thanks to Caitlin Clark), Reese and Carrington are saying the salaries need to go up (among other things) or they’re prepared to sit out. They even speculated that the rookie class for the 2026 season will make more than them on a new agreement, before Reese said:

“I’ve got to get in the meetings because I’m hearing like, ‘If y’all don’t give us what we want, we sitting out.'”

Carrington added:

“That’s a possibility. For real.”

One problem Angel…. nobody will care. I hate to say it, but that’s not the threat that you think it is. And folks were quick to point that out in the comments:

And sure, the WNBA has grown quite a bit, but… it’s still not a profitable league. It’s subsidized by the NBA, and it’s really not even close. In 2024, the league was on pace to lose $40 million (not sure what that final number was) and projects to not be profitable for years… YEARS.

To be fair, Rookies like Clark and Reese are only making about $75,000 a year (less than I make blogging this bullshit about them) and the leagues highest paid players only make about quarter of a million. Players get like 9% of league revenue which is quite low, but again, they don’t make any money… so where is the leverage? Indiana Fever guard and 2023 WNBA Rookie of the Year Aliyah Boston implied that she would like to see a 7 figure salary… LOL! I don’t know if that’s ever gonna happen…

There’s two ways where the players can use a little leverage right now, and both are connected to Caitlin Clark. One… she threatens to sit out. She’s the only player who brings the eyeballs, and she’s historically been a great “team player” meaning I’d fully bet that she’d be willing to sit to help out the girls in the league. The other factor, which is related to Clark, is that the WNBA has never been more popular, and not giving the players some more benefits and letting a lockout happen would kill a lot of that momentum. The buzz created by Caitlin Clark is like nothing we’ve seen in the WNBA and to put her on the sideline seems like a foolish endeavor. You might not get those  fans back when the league resumes.

The again… (as my mom likes to say) you can’t get blood from a rock… if the money isn’t there, it just isn’t there. Like I said, I want the WNBA to succeed, but more people need to watch it, and you know who that includes… more women. So if you really wanna sit out Angel, and you think that’ll matter, you better fire up some more podcasts… the league needs all the side drama it can get.
