Shaquille O’Neal is throwing beads about as well as he shoots free throws.
Mardi Gras concluded yesterday in New Orleans, with many hungover and bead-filled suitcases headed home after a week of partying in the Big Easy.
During Mardi Gras, many social clubs, known as Krewes, put on various parades filled with eccentric floats, colorful outfits, and plenty of beads. Many members of these organizations ride on the floats during the parades, but they also allow celebrities or people with stature to appear on the floats. Shaquille O’ Neal served as the King of Bacchus, essentially the grand marshal for the Krewe of Bacchus parade this year.
On Sunday night, the giant 7’1″ former NBA player towered over the crowd as he sat at the peak of the float on his throne during the parade. During the parade, Shaq made a stellar pass to Jameis Winston, a former New Orleans Saints quarterback, nailing his delivery of a light-up ball.
Side note: Did Winston go home at all after the Super Bowl? Either way, this man stays winning at events in New Orleans.
While that moment was epic, Shaq is going even more viral for another moment during the Krewe of Bacchus Parade. Earlier in their route, Shaq threw packages of jumbo beads into the crowd. Because of the size of the pearls on the string of beads, they were held together with plastic packaging to make the unit more compact.
In the short viral clip, Shaq tosses one of these plastic wrapped packages into the crowd with force, but as his bead helper handed him another one to throw to the crowd, Shaq did not deliver the same forceful throw. He tossed the beads right below him, nailing a young boy on the float in the back of the head.
I’m not really sure what his game plan was with that throw, but no shot made it into the crowd.
“Never did I think I’d watch Shaq throw beads at a kid’s head.”
The creator captioned the video. Hilariously, the kid hardly reacted, jumping a little bit from the impact, but he barely looked around to see where the beads had come from and continued on doing his thing. Shaq, too, looked like he had little remorse for the action.
Just another day during Mardi Gras…
