C’mon people…
As someone who spends an inordinate amount of time on the internet, and social media in particular, it honestly never ceases to amaze. I’ve been busy blogging for the past decade, and I’ve truly seen it all in the deepest caverns of the internet… incredible, heartwarming things, horrible, disturbing things, and everywhere in between. It’s probably given me as much anxiety as it has joy. I’ts nothing in comparison to our American war fighters and first responders, but sometimes I feel like I’ve just seen too much… you know? Can’t be healthy…
And that being said, I’m still astonished by the amount of cluelessness that goes on in the interwebs every single day. Comments sections on blogs or social media posts, the discourse on X at times, it’s usually a constant cesspool of chaos, and I’m not sure if it’s because some of dumbest people in planet Earth spend all day commenting on random social media posts, or people are just not that familiar with technology and how the internet works.
Take my parents for instance… early 60s, blue collar, Midwestern, working class people…. who are utterly confused about what they see on the internet. The amount of phony videos, bad headlines, and fake news that they fall for is alarming. And luckily, they’re still pretty afraid to use their credit cards online so they haven’t been scammed out of money like some folks have, but now that the world of AI is running rampant… I’m expecting the level of confusion to grow exponentially.
Like this viral video here… I KNOW my mom is gonna text me about this.
Some people are ecstatic about a new 200-foot statue of Jesus that is being erected on the White House lawn. Reminiscent of the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the massive stone structure features a depiction of Jesus with His arms stretched wide. Only problem is… that it’s 100% fake.
Looks pretty cool, though:
@spectacularsights The 200-foot statue of Jesus on the White House lawn is complete, standing tall as a reminder that no government, no leader, no law is greater than the KING of KINGS. HIS shadow now falls over the White House. #JesusOverAmerica #OneNationUnderGod #ChristIsKing #FaithInGovernment #RevivalIsHere #AmericaForJesus #GodsPlan #HolyMonument #ChristianCommunity #JesusSaves #FaithOverFear #PrayForAmerica #PraiseTheLord #ChristianUnity ♬ This I Believe – Kristen Protestant
Even videos of the alleged construction have people convinced that it is real:
@spectacularsights This 200-foot Jesus statue on the White House lawn is a powerful reminder that no matter who leads the nation, Christ reigns forever. Imagine walking up to the gates and seeing this—arms open wide, welcoming all. A symbol of hope, strength, and the foundation this country was built on. #JesusOverAmerica #OneNationUnderGod #FaithInTheWhiteHouse #ChristIsKing #PraiseTheLord #ChristianPatriot #FaithOverFear #RevivalComing #ChristianCommunity #JesusLovesYou @President Donald J Trump @Greg Price @Karoline Leavitt ♬ God Only Knows – for KING & COUNTRY
A number of comments began praising the Trump administration for working to restore the United States’ collective faith in God, but of course, this is not real.
I’m not sure if the comments are hilarious… or sad:
“God bless America”
“It is beautiful”
“I’m speechless and I never thought I’d see this in my lifetime…”
“There is another one in Lisbon Portugal, and another one in Brazil.”
“America, idol worshiping, haven’t you all learn anything from Rio Brazil.”
“I cried as I watched this.”
“We need more Jesus statues in many other countries.”
“Making America great again.”
“I have chills. This changes everything.”
“Is this true? Oh my goodness I’m shocked but thankful.”
“This would NEVER HAPPEN IN THE UK NOW.”
“Unbelievable, such an amazing deed, you are truly the best President.”
“God bless you Mr. Trump.”
To be fair, many of the comments correctly called it out as AI, and even others who wanted to believe that it was true, and would welcome it, were skeptical and couldn’t find anything online to verify it. But there were so many who fell for the AI video. To date, these videos have racked up millions and millions of views, fooling tens of thousands, maybe even hundreds of thousands of people.
And even if there was a plan for this, Trump has been in office for a month, there’s no way it would be finished by now. Also, why are there leaves on the trees in the video… it’s February? And that’s just two of the more obvious things… I won’t even get into the actual issues with the video itself. Like the fountains not moving…
So when you actually think about it for 2 seconds, of course it is fake. But… nobody takes the time to do that anymore. So how about it… here’s to thinking a little more in 2025? Before we start commenting on and sharing videos… I know we can do it, folks.
