Ladies and gentlemen… the future is finally here.
I’m sure you’ve heard a lot of big words and phrases like “artificial intelligence” and “virtual reality” lately. It can all be a bit overwhelming, don’t you think? Hopefully this different example of technological advancement will be something that we can all finally get behind.
A video is going viral online that appears to show racing fans attending the Daytona 500 in Daytona Beach, Florida. In reality, they were over 1,000 miles away in The Colony, Texas at a venue that calls itself “The Cosm.” What’s the Cosm? Well, their website describes the new viewing phenomenon as the following:
“Cosm is redefining content and the fan experience, and reimagining how we share it with others. Our revolutionary technology and state of the art venues completely immerse and transport you into the content, putting you in the front row of an NBA game or within a spectacular piece of art.
By combining state-of-the-art structural engineering, innovative display technology, advanced production software, and programming ranging from live sports to interactive art, we’re pioneering the limits of what’s possible.”
The Cosm has gone viral before, with it’s incredible game day experience, but I don’t think anything can compete with its NASCAR experience.
It’s often explained as a “shared reality” experience, and the pitch is that you don’t have to wear any bulky goggles or headsets, yet you are still fully immersed in whatever Cosm is displaying. Plus it’s another place that you can sit around with friends while eating and drinking… which is just as important.
Once the Daytona 500 actually got going (the race was plagued by bad weather for hours), these racing fans got comfortable in their seats, and every seat was the best one in the house. If this video makes you feel like they were actually at the race, I can’t imagine how it must feel in person. I know it’s hard to believe, but again, these people are not actually at the Daytona 500, yet they are getting to experience it all as if they were:

That’s truly unbelievable.
As of right now, there are only two Cosm venues in existence: one in Los Angeles, California and the other in Dallas (The Colony), Texas. There are plans for more to be built across the country, and I can definitely see the allure. Don’t want to travel to watch the big race or the big game? No problem. Just hop on over to your local Cosm and watch it – and feel like you are there – thanks to the power of shared reality.
Social media users are on board, and they simply can’t get over the fact that those people aren’t actually at the Daytona 500:
“Dude I literally thought they were at the track.”
“I could’ve sworn they were in a suite at the Daytona 500.”
“Not gonna lie… it took me 10 seconds to realize this wasn’t at Daytona.”
“Finally we’re using technology the right way.”
“I’d get kicked out for getting too rowdy cause I’d think I’m actually at the race.”
