You sure it wasn’t the quarterback’s fault?
Despite going into the Super Bowl as the favorites to win their third straight Lombardi Trophy, the Kansas City Chiefs suffered a humiliating defeat to the Philadelphia Eagles in New Orleans last night. The final score of 40-22 isn’t really even indicative of how lopsided the game was, with the Eagles going into the final quarter up 34-6 and the Chiefs managing to score a couple garbage time touchdowns to make it look a little more respectable on paper.
But the truth is, the Eagles defense dominated the Chiefs offensive line, and quarterback Patrick Mahomes was pressured all night, leading him to make some bad decisions that led to multiple turnovers and long yardage situations.
It was easily one of the worst games of Mahomes’ career, and afterwards the quarterback took full blame for the loss:
“I take all the blame for that. Those early turnovers swing the momentum of the game, and then they capitalized on ’em…
It’s hard to come back from that in the Super Bowl. Just didn’t play to my standard, and I have to be better next time.”
A perfectly reasonable analysis from Mahomes. He had a rough game, and took responsibility for it.
Chiefs fans, on the other hand, had another theory for why they lost: It was President Donald Trump’s fault.
Trump became the first sitting president to attend the Super Bowl last night, and he had high praise for the Chiefs and Mahomes ahead of the game when he predicted that Kansas City would three-peat:
“I’ve watched this great quarterback, who has by the way a phenomenal wife, by the way. She’s a Trump fan, she’s a MAGA fan, so I happen to love her, ok? But she’s a great person. I watched her being interviewed, I said, ‘Boy, that’s pretty good.’
But she’s great. And he’s great.
I guess you have to say that when a quarterback wins as much as he’s won, I have to go with Kansas City. At the same time, Philadelphia has a fantastic – it’s going to be just a great game.”

(Turned out he was wrong on two counts: The Chiefs lost, and it wasn’t a great game).
Well Trump received quite the reception in the Superdome, with cheers erupting as the president was shown on the big screen during the national anthem:

And after the game, Trump compared that to the reaction that Taylor Swift, girlfriend of Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, got from the crowd:

But apparently, some Chiefs fans and Swifties think it was actually Trump who cursed the Chiefs and is to blame for the embarrassing loss.
In one video, a woman is seen having an absolutely insane meltdown, blaming Trump for the loss:

And several Swifties also think it was the president who cursed the Chiefs, not only because he picked them to win and praised Mahomes but because the Mahomes family was spotted taking a picture with Trump during the game and seemed to embrace his presence at the Super Bowl:

Totally normal reactions here.
Of course, the simplest explanation is that the Chiefs offensive line got dominated, Mahomes played one of the worst games of his career, and the Eagles are just a good football team. But hey, whatever makes them feel better about the loss.
