Senator Chuck Schumer Says “Most Beer Comes From Mexico” (It Doesn’t) While Talking About President Donald Trump’s Tariffs

Chuck Schumer

Come again, Chuck? New York Senator Chuck Schumer, who has served as Senate Majority Leader since 2021, is one of the many politicians ringing the bell of warning in regards to President Donald Trump's tariffs. Have you ever heard the word "tariff" more in your life? Trump's decision to impose tariffs is an effort to ultimately hold countries like Mexico, Canada and China accountable. His executive order was even titled "Imposing Duties to Address the Flow of Illicit Drugs Across Our Northern Border.” The tariffs on imports, goods and energy are supposed to be beneficial in the long run, but many are pointing towards the tariffs causing price increases on things like groceries, energy and gas) for Americans in the short term. Despite those reports, Donald Trump has refused to back down and stands by his plan to hit other countries with tariffs - something he was promising to do while he was campaigning for re-election. Many believe that the president is implementing the tariffs as more of a chess move to force favorable negotiations with affected countries. And while he's in the middle of it all, politicians that oppose him are informing the public of the negative impacts tariffs can have. Chuck Schumer stood up before the media and explained that Americans - if the tariffs are even imposed - would pay the price at their respective Super Bowl parties. The senator suggested that the "Big Game" staple of guacamole could soar in price, and that football fans would undoubtedly pay more for beer... because as he said, that's where most brewskis come from: "Let's just take Super Bowl Sunday, okay? It's gonna affect beer. Most of it - including Corona here - comes from Mexico. It's gonna affect your guac. Because what is guacamole made of? Avocados. Both (are) from Mexico." https://twitter.com/greg_price11/status/1886209173743919468 Though Mexico is the largest exporter of beer in the world in terms of dollars, and the United States imports nearly all of it, most beers are not made by our Southern Neighbor as Chuck Schumer implied. Far from it rather... While it's true that most of the United States' beer imports come from Mexico, that's just a fraction of the overall beer market in America. China, Brazil and the United States of America (USA! USA! USA!) actually make the most beer in the world by volume. Beers like Budweiser, Busch Light, Yuengling, and Sam Adams are all, to quote Bruce Springsteen, "Born in the USA," and I think we could all get by for a while without Modelo and Corona (love a good Corona with lime though). Plus, there's a zillion craft breweries in America too... The good news is that what Chuck was warning us about won't actually be a problem. As I said before, Trump could be using the tariffs for intimidation and leverage more than anything else. President Trump announced earlier today that Mexico and the United States have already reached an agreement to stall tariffs for the time being: "I just spoke with President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico. It was a very friendly conversation wherein she agreed to immediately supply 10,000 Mexican soldiers on the border separating Mexico and the United States. These soldiers will be specifically designated to stop the flow of fentanyl and illegal immigrants into our country. We further agreed to immediately pause the anticipated tariffs for a one month period during with we will have negotiations headed by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Secretary of Treasury Scott Bessent, Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick and high-level representatives of Mexico. I look forward to participating in those negotiations with President Sheinbaum as we attempt to to achieve a deal between our two countries." https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/1886456105372459141 So it looks like we can buy avocados and "all the beer from Mexico" at the same price as we would have for our Super Bowl parties.
