Matthew Stafford’s Wife Kelly Stands Up For Carrie Underwood’s Inauguration Performance: “Love That I Didn’t Know Her Stance On Politics”

Kelly Stafford Carrie Underwood

Matthew Stafford's wife, Kelly, has country music star Carrie Underwood's back. As you likely already know, Carrie Underwood was asked to sing at President Donald Trump's inauguration this past week. The country artist was given the honor of singing "America the Beautiful," and that's how she viewed the event. Underwood was simply honored to be there and be asked, as she explained in her statement prior to the performance: “I love our country and am honored to have been asked to sing at the Inauguration and to be a small part of this historic event. I am humbled to answer the call at a time when we must all come together in the spirit of unity and looking to the future.” Underwood never once revealed her political leanings, or who she voted for the 2024 Presidential Election. She just took the opportunity to sing on behalf of the President of the United States, and even with some technical difficulties that forced her to sing a-cappella, her rendition of "America the Beautiful" was... well, beautiful. https://twitter.com/WhiskeyRiff/status/1881399386158322068?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1881399386158322068%7Ctwgr%5E0aeedb19e8b0fb5fb6bf0adb5ae9c1793bf3caab%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.whiskeyriff.com%2F2025%2F01%2F20%2Ffirst-executive-order-was-by-carrie-underwood-fans-react-to-phenomenal-a-cappella-performance-following-technical-difficulties-at-presidential-inauguration%2F Despite the fact that Underwood came out and said beforehand that she was in no way trying to make a political statement, the internet did its thing and the country music star was criticized for being a part of Trump's inauguration. Though for as many people that were saying it was wrong of her to be there on inauguration day, there were just as many that sided with the country music star's decision to perform. One of those people that supported Underwood was Kelly Stafford, wife of Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford. On the most recent episode of her podcast, The Morning After, Kelly and her co-host Hank Winchester briefly discussed the events of the inauguration. Winchester brought up Carrie's performance and commended it, while also pointing out that it would have been foolish for her to pass on the opportunity: "I thought Carrie Underwood was fantastic. I don’t like people coming after her for… to me, no matter who I voted for, if a sitting president calls me and says, would you like to come to the White House? I’m going to the White House. Put your politics aside. A president is a president you honor and respect the office." Kelly Stafford wholeheartedly agreed. She explained that she didn't get to watch much of the inauguration (since she was traveling back from Philadelphia after her husband's team lost to the Eagles), though she saw enough to know that Carrie Underwood wasn't in the wrong for stepping up and singing "America the Beautiful" shortly after Trump was sworn in: “I love that I didn’t know her stance on politics. I mean, I just feel like that’s kind of amazing. And I think it surprised a lot of people that she was going to perform. We just have to respect the power at hand. When they’re in there, you can’t change it. You just gotta pray that they make the right decisions for this country. You gotta support any way you can, even if you don’t like them. You just gotta do it until the next term and then we’ll b*tch again. You know what I mean? But people are in place. It is what it is.” Winchester and Stafford went on to talk about how to deal with friends and family posting political stuff, and easy ways you can avoid getting into political arguments. You can hear more about it all on the newest episode of Kelly's The Morning After podcast: https://youtu.be/IzCZRVNrxjE?si=gk8ubx6Kykj2V-pQ&t=1700
