Tiger Woods Walks Out To Survivor’s “Eye Of The Tiger” For His TGL Debut

Tiger Woods

How did I not see that song choice coming? Now I'm sure you've got a lot of questions. They probably range from, "Why is Tiger Woods playing golf on a Tuesday night?" to "What the hell does TGL mean?" Don't feel bad if you feel lost, but allow me to try and get you caught up to speed. In an effort to foster the growth of the game of golf, professional golf stars Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy - with help from sports executive Mike McCarley and in partnership with the PGA Tour - came up with an idea. What if golf could shine in the spotlight in primetime like other sports? When you think about it, the game of golf rarely ever gets to air during prime television viewing hours. So Tiger and Rory decided to take a chance on starting up a tech-infused golf league called TGL (Tomorrow's Golf League) that delivered all of the stars and all of the shots and all of the stakes. It was a lofty goal, and though there have been some mixed reviews so far, it's not a bad way to spend a weeknight. As far as the premise goes, it's simple-yet-complicated. Teams of professional golfers (representing different cities) compete at the SoFi Center - a high-tech golf stadium specifically built for the competition. It's fit with a massive golf simulator and a putting green that can be spun around to provide different angles and built-in slope technology that ensures competitors never have the same putt twice. The league got started last week, and the ratings for its debut were promising. TGL's first match between the Bay Golf Club and the New York Golf Club reached over 3.2 million unique viewers, and beat out college basketball and NBA games that were airing during the same window: https://twitter.com/ForePlayPod/status/1877114698513981529 I'll be transparent here: I watched it last week and thought it was big win for golf. I might be partial to the sport, but I still think the casual fan could enjoy it (especially if there isn't anything else on). The idea is that the TGL season would take place around this time of the year, when the PGA Tour schedule isn't exactly in full swing - no golf pun intended. And who wouldn't be a fan of something that allows for Tiger Woods to entertain us all on a Tuesday night? The 82-time PGA Tour winner has historically had people locked into their TV screen on Sundays. As he gets later into his career though, the odds of Tiger contending late in tournaments get smaller and smaller (I'm only saying that so he gets fired up and proves me wrong). With how TGL works, Tiger Woods could stay competitive in professional golf for years to come. Considering no one brings the ratings to the game like Tiger, I'd say that's a huge plus. And judging by how electric his intro into TGL was earlier tonight, I think this high-tech golf league just might work. Golfers choose walk-out songs for their player introductions, and Woods went with Survivor's rock ballad "Eye of the Tiger." Like I said earlier, I guess we shouldn't have been surprised, but it was still legendary. Check it out: https://twitter.com/SportsCenter/status/1879321098745000049 TIGER! TIGER! TIGER! The TGL season is just getting started, and is set to run all the way through March. If you're interested in seeing Tiger Woods and other PGA Tour stars (and I sure hope they bring LIV Golfers into this eventually) have the time of their lives playing team golf inside the coolest and largest golf simulator in the world, give it a shot. You just might be entertained: https://twitter.com/TGL/status/1879321957877137410
