‘Yellowstone’ Actor Recalls Getting Up-Close & Personal With Kevin Costner’s Junk On Set: “My Mom Would Want To Trade Places”

Dave Annabel

One Yellowstone actor is recalling a time when he really got to know Kevin Costner while on set. Dave Annable wasn't in the Yellowstone universe for very long, but his character certainly left a lasting impact that's still felt as the show currently wraps up its fifth and final season. Annable played Lee Dutton - the first born and thus oldest child of John Duttton - and didn't even make it past the first episode. I don't think this counts as a spoiler alert anymore, so I'll just go ahead and say that Lee Dutton was shot during a cattle dispute by Kayce Dutton's (Luke Grimes) brother-in-law in the show, Robert Long. Though viewers didn't know Annable character all that well, Yellowstone still managed to create an emotionally visceral moment in its opening act. Particularly in the scene where Costner's John Dutton rode his son's corpse out to the family grave site and delivered a monologue. It's a memorable moment in the show, and one that is very much stuck to in Annable's head. Dave Annable was recently a guest on The Rich Eisen Show, and talked about how he knew he wouldn't be in the show for very long, and that iconic scene he shared with Kevin Costner: "I read the script and obviously I knew I was going to die. But what I didn't know was how much fun I'd have. It was a funny story. It's day one of shooting. My first scene was I was dead on the horse... where Costner picks me off the horse and sort of lays me on his lap." First off, it's always interesting to hear order of shooting on TV shows and movies. It's funny to know that Annable's first scene he shot ended up being the last on-screen appearance (not counting flashbacks) for Lee Dutton. And boy oh boy was it an poignant moment - at least as it appeared on screen. For Annable, he remembers two things in particular that were extremely challenging during the take: "Playing dead is hard to begin with, which I've learned. It's just hard. Playing dead on a horse is like that times 100, because you're trying to not breathe, you know? Costner pulls me off the horse - this is take one - lays me in his lap, and when he lays me in his lap, I promise you, I feel.... (his d*ck)... across my cheek." You'll have to watch the clip below, because the actor uses his hand to help visualize what exactly he meant. As if what he said wasn't descriptive enough. Annable went on to talk about how moving of a scene it ended up being, all while he was face-to-jewels with the highly respected movie star: "And in the scene he says this beautiful monologue. He's kissing my forehead. He's crying. And I'm just... all I could think about was how much my mom would want to trade places with me. I said to myself, 'What happened to my life? Where am I?' as I'm feeling soft tears (and) just the softest lips." Hilarious. If you ever happen to rewatch the very first episode of Yellowstone, I guarantee you won't view it the same knowing this. And just in case anyone thought Annable was exaggerating, he insisted that it was telling the truth: "It's a true story. He's a very lucky man. Probably my most memorable experience - from my adult life. The Giants winning the Super Bowl is just below. I can tell you what it's like to work with all of Kevin Costner."
