Kentucky Man Arrested Twice In 3 Days After Leading Police On Low Speed Mule Chase

mule chase

Move over Florida Man... we've got a Kentucky man story. I'm pretty invested in this story, only because it took place in my college town of Murray, Kentucky (Go Racers! Shoes up!). Murray State University, usually known for affordable education and where NBA star Ja Morant went to school, is getting some extra publicity in the form of a police chase that took place near their campus. The story begins at a bar right across the street from Murray State's campus this past weekend, when a man that had rode his mule to a popular "watering hole" got a little too drunk and ended up trying to evade police on his trusty steer - according to the Murray Police Department: "Officers responded at 9:09 p.m. Saturday to a local alcohol establishment for a report of an unruly person. Officers found that Jonathan Mason, 39, of Murray, had been asked to leave but refused. Officers said Mason was outside the business and 'manifestly under the influence of alcohol' when they arrived. He had ridden a mule to the business and reportedly refused to stop when the officer ordered. According to police, Mason resisted when officers attempted to arrest him. Witnesses said that Mason was seen mistreating the mule and whipping it an 'unnecessary amount; at a different location." What? A man can't have a night out on the town anymore? All jokes aside, there's no excuse for mistreating an animal. Mason was charged with second-degree disorderly conduct, alcohol intoxication in a public place, third-degree criminal trespassing, resisting arrest, and most importantly, second-degree cruelty to animals. He was taken to the local county jail in Calloway County. That should have been the end of the story, right? Well, not exactly. The story continued Monday afternoon when Jonathan Mason - who presumably was released on bond - broke his own mule out of where it was being stabled and tried to ride it away to freedom. That prompted the police to respond to a call about the modern-day-outlaw once more, as the second police report explained: "Officers responded at 12:51 p.m. Monday to the area where the mule was stabled for a report of a man who appeared intoxicated and was riding a mule on the road. According to the department, officers found Mason on the mule. He reportedly refused to stop and fled down the road on the mule. And here's the video to prove it: https://twitter.com/DrewFranklinKSR/status/1866577985941159965?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1866573061513720267%7Ctwgr%5E6ac92dbc27c363e06a3bf6321a235d86698987d9%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.on3.com%2Fteams%2Fkentucky-wildcats%2Fnews%2Fmurray-man-tried-to-evade-police-on-a-mule-after-a-wild-weekend-in-murray%2F Once Mason's high-speed (?) chase ended at the Hih Burger Inn (a popular breakfast spot in town), he was once again arrested and charged with third-degree fleeing or evading police and second degree cruelty to animals, then took a trip to the Calloway County Jail for a second time in a matter of three days. Considering Murray State University (my alma mater) has a race horse as mascot, this might be one of the most ironic arrests in the history of police enforcement. It's the equivalent of a Irish man near Notre Dame's campus being arrested for fighting, or someone named Pete near Oklahoma State getting booked for shooting someone with a pistol.
