Happy Gilmore 2 will be here before we know it.
Back in April, Adam Sandler revealed that a sequel to the 1990's classic
Happy Gilmore was in the works. Though some were concerned that a sequel would potentially take away from the first film, others have been over the moon thinking about the possibility of seeing everyone's favorite amateur-professional golfer back on the big screen.
Sandler has gone onto
The Dan Patrick Show periodically to give updates on the film, and we just recently got the exciting news that the sequel has already wrapped filming.
Happy Gilmore 2 reportedly finished up shooting last Friday, which means that the movie now moves into post-production.
That had Dan Patrick and his producers excited, and even prompted him to start asking Adam Sandler if he could reveal some of the cameos that fans can expect. The sports talk show host first inquired if that would be okay, and the Sandman quickly answered that it would be fine to talk a little bit about who was on set:
"You can say who was there. Shooter was there. He was hanging out."
"Shooter" is referring to the infamous Shooter McGavin character, played by Christopher McDonald. Funny enough, McDonald is the one who first accidentally
spilled the beans that he had seen a script and the sequel was in the works. He's long been connected to the project, so that wasn't much of a surprise.
So Patrick started bothering Sandler about other cameos, and the 58-year-old actor and comedian conceded that he'd let him know if something was off limits:
"I don't know if... they're gonna yell at me no matter what because they asked me not to do any press. But what do you want to say? You say it and I'll tell you if it's good or bad to talk about it."
That basically gave Dan Patrick the green light to start spitting out some cameos in the movie, like one by rapper and hip-hop artist Eminem. Sandler confirmed that the "Lose Yourself" singer would be in the film:
"Eminem was cool. He came by and he was great."
Dan Patrick then brought things from hip-hop to the golf world, suggesting that the legendary former professional golfer Jack Nicklaus would be seen in the film. For someone that was worried about giving too much away, Sandler was very open with validating some of these big-time name drops:
"Jack Nicklaus, yes. He came by for a couple of days. All of these great golfers came by and they did a great scene and we all hung out. He was amazing. In the scene, I sit next to Jack, so I got to talk to him and he was so nice to me, man."
Other confirmed cameos that are expected to be included in the film include
Travis Kelce,
John Daly, and Dan Patrick himself - who has been known to drop in for small roles on Adam Sandler projects. It has also been rumored that Tiger Woods will be featured in the film, but that has yet to be confirmed. Though the Sandman did refer to "all these great golfers" coming by to help out with the movie, so that certainly leaves the door open.
The
Happy Gilmore actor also previously added that the losses of Bob Barker (who played himself), Carl Weathers (who played Chubbs), and Joe Flaherty (who played the guy that yelled “jackass”) are irreplaceable heading into the sequel, and that all of those roles would be honored in some way. It’s clear that Sandler and everyone involved are working hard to make a second installment that not only adds to the Gilmore-McGavin universe, but also honors the 90’s classic.
The movie is expected to come out around July of next year, and I know I'll be in the grouping of people highly anticipating the movie's release. Before Dan Patrick let Adam Sandler go, he asked if Happy Gilmore himself felt any type of pressure bringing this character back for a sequel - considering some second times around can blemish a film's legacy.
Sandler answered by saying:
"A lot. I want it to be great. Me and (Tim) Herlihy were just going over the movie, talking about the thing and how we are going to put it together. We've got a lot of good sh*t and we just want to make sure that it all comes together and it keeps it going from start to finish. That's the goal. We're definitely nervous, but we feel some sort of confidence."
