Kansas City Chiefs DT Tershawn Wharton Catches Small Child Who Fell Out Of The Stands Onto The Field

Chiefs Tershawn Wharton catches kid

Best catch of the day...and it came from a defensive tackle. The Kansas City Chiefs were in Charlotte this past weekend to take on the Carolina Panthers in a game that turned out to be pretty typical for what we've seen from the Chiefs so far in 2024. They're 10-1 on the season, but most of their games have been nail-biters or single digit victories, even against their weaker opponents. (The exception has been, of course, their game against my New Orleans Saints, which was an easy win for Kansas City). But anyway, despite the Panthers being one of the worst teams in the NFL, the Chiefs only managed to pull out a 30-27 win after a field goal as time expired. It's just been that kind of year for the Chiefs - and unfortunately, for every team that's had to face them. Well that lucky charm that the Chiefs seem to have following them around this year apparently came in handy for one young Chiefs fan who was at Bank of America Stadium this past weekend to cheer on his team. After the win, Chiefs fans who made the trip to Charlotte were lined up on the railing of the stands to congratulate the players. But one kid at the end of the row, who was reaching over to shake hands with the players, managed to fall through a (rather large) gap just as some Chiefs were walking over to shake hands with them. Luckily, defensive tackle Tershawn Wharton was close enough that he was able to catch the child as he was falling and get him back up over the railing, as the security guard ordered everybody else to back away from the railing. https://twitter.com/T__Russ/status/1860885964148592803 I mean, a few things stand out here to me: First, obviously, is great job by Tershawn Wharton for his quick thinking and keeping the situation from becoming much worse than it was. The 26-year old defensive lineman from Missouri S&T is in his fifth year with the Chiefs after going undrafted in 2020. Gotta think there's a lot of fans thankful for him right now. But nobody's more thankful for him than David Tepper, the owner of the Carolina Panthers. If that kid had gotten hurt, his family would have owned the team (which Panthers fans would probably be ok with) because why in the hell was that gap so big that a kid could easily fall through it? Isn't that the point of the railing, to keep people from ending up on the field? Who designed that stadium, and was it the same guy who drafted Bryce Young? And last but not least, you know that security guard also saw his job flash before his eyes. Your job is to keep everybody safe and keep them off the field. That's pretty much it. And somehow you let a kid fall onto the field right beside you? Guy better be thankful that Wharton was there to save the day, but you can hear the panic in his voice as he tries to get the fans to move back from the railing. Ultimately though, just thankful the kid is ok (and has a helluva story to tell his buddies at school) and that Wharton was in the right place at the right time.
