Cannibal sandwich

Alright, I think it's time we had a meeting with the Midwest because this is too far. While it's no secret that folks from the Midwest might have some interesting taste in cuisine, a social media post highlighting an "old school" Wisconsin dish is a little much for even the most daring of palates. This makes all the Jell-O-filled casseroles look like child's play. A social media account called the Midwest Munchers uploaded a video over the summer highlighting a cannibal sandwich. While the video might not be new, the comments section is still buzzing with disgust about this dish. No cannibal sandwiches are not people eating humans, but it is surprising to me how this is legal because a cannibal sandwich is made with raw ground beef. It's actually an old German dish called Mettbrötchen. The narrator of the video describes it as: "There is nothing more Midwesty than cannibal sandwiches AKA raw beef sandwiches. Basically, you're taking some rye bread and topping it with pepper jack cheese, raw ground beef, onions, salt, and pepper. This is super traditional, old-school Wisconsin food." Isn't eating ground beef a huge no-no, and why don't you order burgers rare? In fact, if you Google anything about eating raw ground beef, it will spit back at you: "Ground beef is more likely to contain harmful bacteria like E. coli and salmonella because it's processed more than other cuts of meat. The bacteria can be mixed throughout the meat, especially in the center of the burger." I was an animal science major in school (shocking twist, I know, as I am here now writing blogs for a living), and this was one of the first things we were taught during my meat science class. Any sort of ground meat is not okay for raw consumption. How does a restaurant get around health inspectors and not shut them down for serving this? Aside from all the food safety questions I have surrounding this, it looks like you are eating dog food. Nothing about this video makes me want to try this at all. I'd say I'm a pretty adventurous eater. I love sashimi, beef carpaccio, tuna, or beef tartar, so the rawness of this does not gross me out. It just does not look appetizing in the slightest bit. https://www.instagram.com/p/C9YTz0OORfC/ Thank goodness I was not alone in questioning this dish. I would say, in this instance, do not knock it until you try it, but I'd rather not get violently ill from consuming raw ground beef. I also find it hilarious that in the caption of this post, after promoting how traditionally incredible these sandwiches are, the content creators even noted they would probably not order it again. "Was it great? Nope. Was it bad? Nope. Would I order it again? Meh." Wisconsin, could you explain this one? While you're here, check out some of our favorite comments on the post. "Did a tapeworm make this dish?" "The Jeffery Dahmer sandwich." "Please don’t be deceived. The Midwest does NOT approve." "Rolling the dice consuming raw ground beef? What don’t you like about life?" "We used to make those when I lived in Wisconsin, we just cooked the meat." "I love Wisconsin with all my heart, but I can’t do it." "Holy gag reflex." "Admit it. You’re too drunk to cook it." "This is not a Midwestern thing; it's a psychotic thing." "34 years old from Wisconsin, never even heard of this." "E. coli sandwich."
