MSNBC Blasted Over Headline Saying Georgia College Student Laken Riley’s Killer “Never Stood A Chance”

Jose Ibarra

Do these people even hear themselves? The brutal murder of Georgia college student Laken Riley back in February touched off a firestorm in the debate over illegal immigration, even becoming a topic in the 2024 presidential election after it was revealed that her killer, 26-year old Jose Ibarra, was from Venezuela and in the United States illegally. Riley was a 22-year old nursing student at Augusta University who went missing while out on a run at the nearby University of Georgia. When she didn't return home from her run, Riley was reported missing by her roommates, and her body was discovered a short time later by UGA police, brutally beaten after being targeted seemingly at random. President Joe Biden mentioned Riley during his State of the Union address shortly after her death (though he called her "Lincoln Riley"), and former President Donald Trump frequently invoked Riley's murder on the campaign trail as proof that stronger action was needed on illegal immigration - even meeting with her family personally back in March. https://twitter.com/TeamTrump/status/1767244328106156313 Ibarra was on trial in Georgia this week, charged with three counts of felony murder, malice murder, false imprisonment, kidnapping, aggravated assault with intent to rape, hindering a 911 call, concealing the death of another, and peeping Tom. During the emotional trial, heartbreaking bodycam video was made public of the moment Riley's family were told that she was dead: https://twitter.com/Breaking911/status/1859311369193136479 And it was also revealed that Ibarra, who was allegedly a member of a Venezuelan gang, had actually flown to Georgia after receiving a voucher from the government for a flight to Atlanta: https://twitter.com/greg_price11/status/1858557291467075725 Infuriating. Well ultimately Ibarra opted for a bench trial, meaning the case would be heard by a judge instead of a 12-person jury of his peers. And after hearing the evidence, the judge found Ibarra guilty of all 10 counts and sentenced him to life in prison without the possibility of parole (after prosecutors decided not to seek the death penalty). Unfortunately it's the only justice that our system can give to Riley and her family here on this Earth, so naturally most people were happy that this monster was going to be behind bars for the rest of his life. But one headline from MSNBC found the network coming under fire after seemingly siding with the killer. An article from MSNBC legal analyst Danny Cevallos this morning titled "Laken Riley's Killer Never Stood A Chance" quickly began going viral - not for his expert legal announcement, but for the tone-deaf headline that made it sound like Ibarra was the victim in the case. https://twitter.com/DonaldJTrumpJr/status/1859929625113288783 https://twitter.com/redsteeze/status/1859860530854523087 https://twitter.com/DefiantLs/status/1859910365808840741 https://twitter.com/JohnLeFevre/status/1859799828890517722 https://twitter.com/joerogan/status/1859978463748514056 https://twitter.com/TiffanyFong_/status/1859979824821084180 Feel like that last tweet said it best. After the article began getting attention online, MSNBC quietly edited the headline, which now reads "The Guilt of Laken Riley's Killer Was Never In Doubt." As for the article itself, Cevallos attempts to explain the legal maneuvers in the trial, such as opting for a bench trial over a jury, while calling the case "truly awful" and "unwinnable" for the defense attorneys representing Ibarra. And both of those things are true: There was no chance that Ibarra was going to be found not guilty, or that he would be given the opportunity at parole. The facts of the case were horrific and the evidence was overwhelming. But the headline MSNBC chose to go with, saying that he "never stood a chance," is just another long line of examples of why people hate the media so damn much - and rightfully so.
