The SNL Cast Looked Like They Were At A Funeral While Attempting To Make Jokes About Donald Trump’s Election Win

SNL Trump win

Trying to smile through the pain, eh? We've seen a lot of people who are really going through it after former President Donald Trump defeated Vice President Kamala Harris on Tuesday to become the 47th President of the United States. Social media looks like a livestream of a mental institution as people film their breakdowns and put them out for the world to see. For example: https://twitter.com/libsoftiktok/status/1854263018865242321 Good to see everybody handling it so well. Of course the Democrats in Hollywood and the media (so everybody in Hollywood and the media) are also having a rough week, so naturally people were curious about how Saturday Night Live would handle Trump's dominant victory. Remember the hilariously bad opening from 2016 when they had Kate McKinnon dressed as Hillary Clinton singing "Hallelujah?" https://twitter.com/MarlowNYC/status/797660520694288384 Can't get worse than that, right? Well I'm happy to report that it wasn't quite as ridiculous this time around. They at least tried to be funny during the opening sketch, though whether they succeeded is up for debate. Last night's episode opened with cast members declaring that the results of the election were "horrifying," after Donald Trump "tried to forcibly overturn the results of the last election" and "called for vengeance against his political enemies." They then delivered a message directly to Trump: "We have been with you all along." They then spent 4 minutes sarcastically professing their love and support for Trump, even debuting a new portrayal of the next president, "hot, jacked Trump." There were some funny moments, like Colin Jost trying to throw Michael Che under the bus, but just knowing that they're all massive liberals who were seething inside and hating every minute of this just made it awkward. Like, you could have done a hilarious skit about the Kamala campaign trying to figure out why they lost, like spending six figures on a set for Call Her Daddy and $20 million on concerts with Katy Perry and Lady Gaga the day before the election instead of trying to win over male voters. I could even write the sketch for you. Call me, Lorne Michaels. But that wasn't the route the show decided to take. Instead they went with the thinly-veiled shots at the president and an awkward delivery that looked more like they were at a funeral than on a late-night comedy show. Then again, they're not the only ones who are having a rough week. Jimmy Kimmel was in tears during his monologue the day after Trump was declared the winner. And SNL also went all-in for Kamala, having the Democrat candidate on the show leading up to the election to do a sketch alongside Maya Rudolph, who has portrayed Harris on the show. https://twitter.com/nicksortor/status/1852921791380881460 Remember, she turned down an appearance on Joe Rogan, which has a lot more viewers than SNL and appeals to an audience she needed to win over, to do this skit. Would have been hilarious if SNL had made fun of her for appearing on their show. A little self-deprecating humor. But once again, they proved that they can't look in the mirror, make fun of both sides equally, try to gain a new audience that you've turned off in recent years, because they refuse to make fun of Democrats in any meaningful way other than a few jokes about Joe Biden being old. Of course we wouldn't expect them to do anything actually funny at this point, so it's good to see they didn't disappoint. https://twitter.com/nbcsnl/status/1855470889619411397
