Nick Bosa Receives $11,255 Fine For Wearing Donald Trump MAGA Hat After 49ers’ Win Over Cowboys

The fact that the NFL doesn't allow political messaging of any kind didn't stop San Francisco 49ers superstar Nick Bosa from expressing his support for president elect Donald Trump after the team's Week 8 win over the Cowboys. However, Bosa's wallet will still take a bit of a hit. As confirmed by multiple reports on Saturday, the All-Pro defensive end got fined $11,255 for his violation of league policy. https://twitter.com/tompelissero/status/1855357151973138697 Bosa didn't have any regrets about rocking his "Make America Great Again" hat when he crashed Brock Purdy's postgame interview. By the time Bosa reached the postgame podium, though, the MAGA hat was gone, and he declined to elaborate much at all on his Trump supporter status. A lot of detractors said Bosa was soft for not explaining more about his presidential endorsement. I feel like he just didn't want to lose more money, figuring the hat made enough of a statement on its own. Naturally when reporters circled back to Bosa following Trump's victory, he was of course very happy about it. The 27-year-old Florida native took a lot of heat for the MAGA hat, but he had the last laugh in the end. That $11,255 sounds like a lot of money, especially for the simple act of sporting unacceptable headgear. It's relative pocket change for Bosa. Too lazy to math that out and see if I'm literally right about that. Nevertheless, I do know Bosa signed a five-year contract extension worth $170 million last September. Don't think he'll feel the hurt from a low five-figure fine too much. If the NFL wanted to really deter this kind of behavior, they could've made Bosa's penalty more significant. On the other hand, I feel like that'd just make the situation turn ugly, and all kinds of back-and-forth about freedom of speech would likely ensue. Sounds like a headache. Here's the full NFL rule explanation to provide further context for this train of thought: https://twitter.com/AlbertBreer/status/1855363393391091852 Politics in particular are so divisive and super touchy when it comes to personal messaging from public figures. "Football is awesome" is one of the only things most of us can agree on in this country these days. The endless parade of political ads down the stretch of the presidential election have me feeling like athletes should just, like, speak their mind via video on their personal social media accounts, but keep all the other stuff away from the game day atmosphere. That seems reasonable to me at least. The NFL itself has engaged in initiatives for social justice and equality with some of the messaging they've had on the field at stadiums around the league. You still see some slogans like that on players' helmets as well. First example I could find: https://twitter.com/brgridiron/status/1287899338849452032 Those tend to be more left-leaning political messages, so maybe if Bosa was wearing a Harris-Walz camo hat, the league office would've been a little kinder to him. Who knows? Plus, Bosa's support of Trump doesn't seem to bother San Francisco fans much, despite that area of the country being heavily Democrat. Here's something that bodes well for the 49ers, too: Bosa's right-leaning politics have been known about for years, yet throughout his NFL career, he's dominated on the field, and I don't recall a single whiff of a rumor about him being a problem in the locker room. Now that the fine business has hit the news, this story will fade away as a non-issue for the Niners, especially if they come storming out of the bye week and make a push for another deep playoff run.
