![“Can’t Even Do Cocaine In This Country Anymore” – Theo Von & JD Vance Discuss The Opioid Epidemic On ‘This Past Weekend’ Podcast]()
![Theo Von JD Vance]()
I'm convinced that Theo Von could solve all of America's problems.
The podcaster and comedian definitely has his own way with words, but most of the time he also makes a lot of sense - in his own unique way. And sure, a lot of his podcasts are with comedians and artists talking about railing lines of cocaine or having sex in an alley behind a skating rink. But he also has some deep conversations with guests too.
Now, I'm not saying he should be president. That would probably be a really bad idea. But then again, I mean, look around us right now. Would things REALLY be that much worse if Theo were running the country?
But I digress. Theo has already interviewed former President Donald Trump on his podcast, as the GOP presidential nominee makes his rounds to appeal to young voters. And it was a must-watch interview, with
Theo educating Trump on the dangers of cocaine in a way that only Theo could:
"Cocaine will turn you into a damn owl, home, you know what I'm saying? You'll be out on your own porch, you'll be your own street lamp."
Classic Theo.
And today it was Trump's running mate's turn to try to solve the world's problems with Theo.
JD Vance joined Theo for an episode of his podcast,
This Past Weekend, and one of the most memorable moments came when the two - once again - began discussing drugs.
It's obviously a topic that hits home for Theo, who's been open about his journey as a recovering addict. But even Theo admits that he would probably still be using drugs if it weren't for fentanyl making things so dangerous:
"I don't know if I'd be sober if the stuff weren't killing people, to be honest with you. I know that's sad to say, but that keeps me out of the risk of it. It makes it scarier."
And Theo also pointed out something that might sound strange on its face, but actually makes a lot of sense when you think about it:
"I mean this is ridiculous to say probably...you can't even do cocaine in this country anymore, you know? And that seems like a crazy thing to say."
Vance got a big kick out of it, and even said he was going to use that line (after the election), but he also understood the point Theo was trying to make: A lot of people experiment with drugs, or have tried drugs, and it shouldn't be a potential death sentence.
"To be clear to those watching, I've never done cocaine before. I've made many mistakes, but not that one...
It's unfortunate that...everybody makes mistakes."
The VP nominee even recounts a story of a friend whose daughter was in a wedding that was cancelled the night before because some of the groomsmen suffered an overdose the night before the wedding:
"You can judge and say, 'Oh they shouldn't have been taking something.' But everybody takes something at some point in their lives. We don't want it to kill people. We don't want stupid mistakes to kill people.
Live and learn from stupid mistakes...now it becomes a death sentence."
Of course the topic has been a personal one for Vance too, after his mother suffered from addiction through much of his childhood before finally getting clean. So clearly he understands what could have been the consequence had fentanyl been as prevalent back then as it is today.
The whole conversation was surprisingly thoughtful for a comedy podcast, but both Theo and Vance made a lot of sense on the issue of the drug crisis.
Maybe Vance could find another position for Theo in his administration. Could use some of Theo's unique brand of common sense up there in Washington.
