Just curious, if Costner said he’s not returning to the series…how is he in the trailer?

Other fans shared comments on YouTube and Instagram: "Ok, now I’m confused. I thought Kevin Costner wasn’t coming back to the series… "How is Kevin Costner in the series if he said he would not be doing it? "Someone can confirm me please If Kevin Costner will continue on the show?" "I’m confused, why is Kevin in this trailer?" "So Kevin Costner finishing the show?" "I see Kevin in there ! I thought he was done ! So glad he is finishing it." "Costner is back." "John is there?" "Wait, I thought Costner wasn't in these episodes." And the truth is, they're just old clips from previous seasons... in fact, I'd say probably about half of the new trailer is just old clips from previous seasons. And while I get that you don't want to spoil anything, it comes off a little bizarre to feature so much of a character who isn't going to be in the show anymore. And it's not like he was a minor character... he's the series lead and there was a very public disagreement about schedules and timing and contracts, and they ultimately couldn't come to an agreement to have Costner finish the series... a huge letdown for fans. So why tease them with so much Costner in the trailer? A number of fans didn't take too kindly to it: "It’s pathetic how you still use Costner’s old clip in the “official trailer” when he’s not gonna be in Part 2." "If Costner is not going to be in the SHOW don't put him in the trailer." "I expected to see him as a lead up to the new season, but he was all over the trailer, even at the end. He was all over the teaser trailers too. I expected producers to phase him out since he won't be in it anymore but they're doing the opposite. Just an observation." "Why is Costner even shown in the trailer if he did not film any of season 5b? I've never seen a trailer with clips mixed from past seasons with new clips." Can't say I disagree... but, you have to imagine they've been backed into a corner with this one. How many shows out there essentially get canceled at the peak of their popularity because the lead actor and the writer can't agree on things? And then to just end it without him... after a LONG hiatus. No matter how well Taylor Sheridan has crafted the ending (Luke Grimes says it's incredible), it's going to be a bit of a letdown simply because Kevin Costner won't be there, . But with a trailer like this, Paramount didn't do anything to mitigate that letdown. If anything, they did the opposite and confused a lot of people, filling them with false hope, which will inevitably set them up for an even bigger letdown. I don't quite understand it... don't get me wrong, I'm still going to tune in (the soundtrack alone is worth it), but it almost seems like they're actively trying to confuse fans who might not be internet savvy enough to keep track on all the drama. You know how many fans (me) are going to get a call from their mom or grandma wondering if Kevin is back? Either way, the series conclusion is gonna be a wild one.
