The internet has been swirling with opinions about the matter since Tyreek Hill's arrest and detainment before the Miami Dolphins season opener. He got straight up Scottie Scheffler’ed (with a dose of extra force) as Miami police pulled him over for speeding but was hit with a seatbelt violation and careless driving as he was on his way to Hard Rock Stadium. Although the scene looked rough when he was handcuffed, he was never actually arrested but instead detained and could still hit the field later that day. Hill made a hilarious nod to the incident after a touchdown, putting his hands behind his back. While Hill was able to make light of the situation on the field, the NFL Players Association and the Miami Dade Police Department have since opened investigations to investigate what happened before kickoff. The one officer has been placed on leave while they continue to investigate the incident. Given what went down on the body camera footage, it's not really a good look. And to be fair, as is usually the case with altercations like this, both sides are to blame. Tyreek could've been more cooperative, but you also can understand why he didn't want police to keep knocking on the window of his very expensive car. And you can also understand why police wanted to keep his blacked-out windows down... so they can maintain their own safety. When a second police officer arrives to the car, he seems to be the one who escalates the situation. But during one portion of the footage, as one of the officers was reviewing his ID, he connected the dots who they had face down on the ground near them in handcuffs. The second officer did not know that the famed Dolphins player was the one they had detained. “Why is he on the ground? You know who that is, right?” “No.” “That’s one of the Dolphins’ star players.” “Oh yeah? F**k.” https://twitter.com/DavidFurones_/status/1833314832314990808 And to be fair, who is in the car shouldn't really matter how they approach the situation... but had they known if was Tyreek, would they've been a little more patient? Who knows. I know not everyone will recognize each person in the limelight out in public, especially if they are not football fans. However, given the fact that they threatened to break his car window, and then dragged him back to the ground after they stood him up, it's just not look good for the Miami Dade Police Department. Hill spoke out in an interview on Monday night with NBC News, noting that it went from "0 to 60" in seconds. "If I wasn’t Tyreek Hill, Lord knows, I probably would have been, like, worst-case scenario, I would have been shot or would have been locked up, and put behind bars, you know, for a simple speeding ticket. And that’s crazy that officers would take it, you know, to that level. It just went from 0 to 60, man, from the moment that those guys pulled up behind me, knocked on my window, it went from 0 to 60 immediately." In the exclusive with the news outlet, Hill noted that he called team security officials from his car as well as his agent, Drew Rosenhaus. He was thankful to his teammates, tight end Jonnu Smith and defensive lineman Calais Campbell, for stopping when they drove by and saw him detained. "When I saw Jonnu and Calais pull up ... I didn't feel alone anymore. They ended up handcuffing Calais for just being 6'8", I think. But it was crazy. It was crazy how that same officer who took me down handcuffed Calais for just standing on the side."
