Golf fans owe you an apology José Luis Ballester… they weren’t familiar with your game.
To be clear, I’m not talking about golf game here, though Ballester has plenty of it. The Spanish amateur golfer is the reigning U.S. Amateur Champion, and he’s currently in the middle of his Masters debut. Ballester is a senior at Arizona State University, and because he won the U.S. Am last summer, he earned an invitation to play at the prestigious Masters tournament at Augusta National Golf Club.
The beloved major tournament has a rich history of amateur participation, and Ballester is one of five amateurs in the field this year. And he’s already making headlines during the first round, and you’d probably assume that’s a good thing, right? Well… not exactly. The 21-year-old decided to wear an upside down “Sun Devils” text hat during the opening round, and though there’s nothing wrong with representing his university, people hated the fashion choice:

I simply don’t understand the appeal of wearing a hat with upside down text.
For those that are aware of the stupid hats, and have vast appreciation for the tradition of the Masters, they are ripping into José Luis Ballester for “not respecting” the tournament that he’s playing in. That noise got even louder when José Luis Ballester let it be known that he peed in the Rae’s Creek – which is arguably golf’s most famous babbling brook located in the iconic Amen Corner stretch of Augusta National.
And he wasn’t even ashamed of it, as he told the media after he completed his first round:
“I completely forgot that we had those restrooms to the left of the tee box. I’m like, I really need to pee. I didn’t really know where to go, and since JT had an issue on the green, I’m like, I’m just going to sneak here in the river, and probably people would not see me that much. They saw me. It was not embarrassing at all for me. If I had to do it again, I would do it again.’’
Jose Luis Ballester took a piss in Rae’s Creek in the middle of the Masters.
Upside down script hat plus urination in the most-famous creek in golf is QUITE the combo.

BUDDY… show some damn respect.
After those two gaffes yesterday, José Luis Ballester was basically public enemy number one in the golf world. There was a ton of negative discourse about the amateur golfer, and there were even calls for the amateur to be banned from both Augusta National Golf Club and the Masters tournament.
But then someone found out that the Spanish golfer has an attractive girlfriend.
We should have seen this coming. 21-year-old golfer with professional aspirations from Arizona State University, a notorious party school? If all of those attributes were variables in a math problem, the solution to the equation would be “Hot Girlfriend.” Her name is Hayden Riley James (gotta look out for those three name girls), and she’s now acting as the only redeeming quality of José Luis Ballester’s Masters debut.
Golf fans are suddenly changing their tune about the Spanish amateur, and now it seems as though they are rooting for Ballester to play well enough to stick around for the weekend… only so more content can be posted by Hayden Riley James:
