Alex Ovechkin

Forget love... beer is the universal language. Just ask Washington Capitals left winger (hockey position - not political affiliation) Alex Ovechkin. He's been playing professional hockey for over 20 years, and he's widely regarded as one of the best goal scorers to ever play the game. And when the Russian All-Star isn't playing hockey, he likes to kick back like the rest of us and sip on ice cold brewskis. Ovechkin sat down with one of his good friends (who just so happens to be a blogger) for an interview, and though it's in Ovechkin's native language, I went ahead and translated (well, Google did) the beer-related quotes he gave. First up, the NHL legend made things very clear about his feelings towards beer, and how much he likes it: "I don’t hide it. I like the taste of beer. I like light beer. Sometimes I can drink Guinness." World class athletes are just like us. I think I've said that exact same line before... Ovechkin only appears to be anti-beer when it comes time to get in shape for the hockey season. He went on to say that he cuts out beer and a lot of other unnecessary items during the preseason, as do a lot of other players in the league: "When training starts, you have to give it up. During the preseason, when you are training, getting into shape, trying to lose extra pounds, you try to limit yourself in food and drink." Makes sense. "Ovi" provided some real insight with those first two quotes, but it's this last point that he made that takes the cake. Or "takes the keg" if we're keeping the beer lingo going. Ovechkin a) called out hockey players who don't like beer b) talked about the medicinal properties of beer and c) revealed that the Capitals have a beer fridge in their facility: "I can’t imagine a (player) who says he doesn’t drink, or that he 'quit.' You can take a break for a certain time, but after the game, two to three cans of beer... with pleasure. It’s useful. In Washington, we have a refrigerator with beer in the coaching room. It’s normal. We just like to relax. A fter hockey, you are tired,. A couple of glasses of wine or beer is normal. It relieves tension.” Couldn't agree more, Alex. We are supposed to listen to the advice that our sports greats give, right? I'm not training to be a hockey player, but it sure sounds like Alex Ovechkin is endorsing beer drinking. Say less "Ovi," say less. If you can speak and understand the Russian language, feel free to enjoy the interview below: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PVyy8IeF9pE
