Dana White, President of the UFC, speaks about his good friend Donald Trump.
White has known and been friends with the former President for over 25 years, so when he heard the news that
Trump had been shot at during a rally in Pennsylvania, the face of the UFC was rattled. He explained how he found out about the terrifying incident while speaking with the
Pat McAfee Show:
"I'm in Italy right now and I was flying over here and I was sleeping on the plane and my wife woke me up and told me that somebody had shot President Trump. Obviously, (he's a) very close friend of mine so I started freaking out. I grabbed my phone and had like 350 text messages. So I was just trying to figure out what was going on with him."
White was soon able to confirm that his colleague was okay, despite being injured in the shooting. Dana was visibly outraged that this was even able to happen, and tried to explain to McAfee that everyone who calls themselves American should be outraged that this happened:
"Taking a shot at the president, some of the things that are being said, it's like... this is a former president and a candidate. Imagine if someone took a shot at Biden or Obama or Clinton? It's like... this is our president. You know what I mean? If it happened to anybody, any of our presidents, every American on Earth should be horrified by this and disgusted and upset and angry."
The host of the Pat McAfee show then asked White about a rumor that was circulating on social media shortly after Trump was rushed off the rally stage and to a hospital. There were unconfirmed reports that Trump was still going to make it to a UFC event in Denver, Colorado despite the fact that he had just survived an assassination.
White explained that was never going to happen, but he did make sure to speak on Trump's toughness and the spirit he conveyed directly after the incident:
"I've been saying this forever about this guy. He is one of the toughest, most resilient human beings that I've ever met in my life. Let me tell you what... everybody wants to act like a tough guy. Well, when the sh*t goes down, you find out who tough guys are and who tough guys are not.
This guy is the legitimate, ultimate American badass of all time. A guy takes a shot at him, he goes down, he stands up and then he starts chanting to the crowd, 'Fight, fight, fight.' I was literally blown away."
As were many other people that watched the video.
Dana is so close with the former president that he was even able to speak with him following the assassination attempt. When the UFC president landed in Italy, he called Trump, and he couldn't help but be blown away by how calm and collected Donald Trump was after nearly losing his life:
"I called him as soon as I landed. I called him and he answered and he was already home from the hospital. We talked for 30 minutes... I'm telling you I have never known a human being like this in my life. He is literally one of the toughest, most badass guys of all time.
Listen, you can say you don't like him, you can say whatever you want about him. It is undebatable now. Literally undebatable. This sniper tried to take a shot at him and missed him by millimeters, a bullet through the ear...this guy is almost 80 years old, a guy tried to blow his head off, and to have the reaction he did when he got up... he's forever now the ultimate American badass."
He went on to explain how he had a friend growing up in South Boston who was nearly murdered and he was never the same. He moved away, and was so shook, as any reasonable person might be, that he was never quite the same.
