![Magnet fishing]()
I am officially ceasing all slander about those who use metal detectors on beaches or that magnet fish.
It's always humorous to see people walking around waving metal detectors back and forth on a beach or passing a boat, pulling up chunks of metal from the bottom of the lake. But, after hearing this story, clearly, these folks are onto something.
A New York City couple hit the jackpot when magnet fishing, pulling up a muddy safe filled with water-logged cash. When fishing at Flushing Meadows Corona Park last week, James Kane was thrilled when he pulled up a lock box. While these boxes might not frequently be filled with valuable items, Kane was beyond shocked to open the safe and find it full of cash.
"I looked, and it was just pure hundred-dollar bills. Humungous stacks of them...I said, 'I think life is about to change as we know it.'"
Yeah, wait until the mob comes looking for it... joking. Or, am I?
Kane's girlfriend initially didn't believe him when he informed her about the magnet catch. But when she saw the one hundred dollar bills, she too was in disbelief, telling
NBC News:
"There was no words. I was in disbelief. This kind of stuff doesn't happen to me. I rarely win like raffles or games...much less hitting the jackpot like this."
The couple, however, wanted to make sure they were not getting ahead of themselves, so they called the New York Police to ensure the money was not stolen. After looking into it, the police department did not link the safe to any criminal activity, noting that the couple could keep their findings.
"In this instance, the value and authenticity of the alleged currency could not be determined due to the severely disintegrated condition of the property."
The safe is estimated to have between $40,000 and $80,000 in it, and it might take years to restore the water-logged bills fully. But, hey, if the two can only restore the lower end of that number, that's still a huge win.
