No frog legs for Dale Jr.
Today, the NASCAR legend joined Kelly Senyei on her podcast Sports and Forks, where he told a great story about his dad, Dale Earnhardt, and his apparent love for frog legs.
Jr. recalled being around 10 or 11 years old and staying at his dads house, where he was sleeping soundly in the middle of the night until he heard some sizzling coming from the kitchen. He got up to go see what was going on, because no one was usually up at this hour, and saw his dad standing there in pajamas frying up some frog legs:
"Maybe frog legs. I remember three o'clock in the morning, I'm probably, I don't know, 10, 11, 12 years old. And I heard some sizzling in the kitchen and no one was ever up at this hour. This was really strange. I go into the kitchen and dad was standing there in his PJs, cooking frog legs in a frying pan."
What makes it so funny is that apparently it was the one and only time he ever witnessed his dad do that (or I guess that he knew of), and Jr. remembers staying up and watching him cook because it was a rare opportunity to spend some quality time alone with his iconic, very busy, racing legend of a father:
"I had never seen this before and I have never seen it since. And for whatever reason, he wanted to get up and eat frog legs. I didn't eat one, but I was like, I looked at them, and I'm like 'Yep, those are definitely frog legs.' I loved it because no one else was awake, and I had dad to myself, right? If you know my father, famous guy, and every waking moment, everybody in the world is trying to get a minute of his time. And I sitting there watching him cook frog legs for about 15 minutes, I'll never forget that. That's probably something I would never eat."
I honestly have so many questions, like how Sr. just happened to have frog legs on hand, or if he went outside and caught some to have fresh that night, or if it really was a one-time thing or some sort of a late-night snack ritual (Jr. says he would probably never eat them).
I guess we'll never know, but the visual of Dale Earnhardt Sr. standing in his kitchen in the middle of the night frying up some frog legs is pretty funny...
