Tucupita Marcano

Safe to say he would have made more money at baseball than gambling. Today the MLB announced that they have permanently banned San Diego Padres infielder Tucupita Marcano, the first player banned for gambling since Pete Rose. An investigation revealed that Marcano had bet on multiple games involving his prior team, the Pittsburgh Pirates, while on injured reserve last year. The 24-year old suffered a torn ACL last July, and hasn't played since then after being claimed off waivers by the Padres during the offseason. But apparently he needed something to do in his downtime, so he decided to do what every other fan does while watching sports and break out the ol' DraftKings app to put some money on the games. According to the MLB, Marcano placed 387 baseball-related bets, totaling over $150,000. Of those, 231 were on MLB games for a total of $87,319, and 25 of those 231 bets involved his team, the Pittsburgh Pirates. Marcano claimed that he never compromised or manipulated any of the games he bet on, and the MLB found nothing to refute that, but still...betting on games, much less games involving your team, is obviously a big problem, ultimately leading to the lifetime ban from the MLB. But another problem for Marcano is how hilariously bad he is at sports betting. The MLB investigation found that Marcano lost every single parlay he placed that involved the Pirates, and only won 4.3% of the 231 MLB bets that he placed. If you're as bad at math as Marcano is at gambling, that means he won 10 bets out of 231. And the internet can't stop roasting him for not only ruining his career, but also for just how bad he is at sports betting: https://twitter.com/mahaaaay/status/1798006829341114870 https://twitter.com/PeteBlackburn/status/1798046720636686809 https://twitter.com/GregBoysen/status/1798045788159025625 https://twitter.com/OnTheBlock01/status/1798007951862681683 https://twitter.com/TheRealLastTake/status/1798005783017521457 https://twitter.com/xGramps/status/1798043787777991029 Marcano's 2024 salary with the Padres was $276,759, so unless those 10 bets were big parlays, it looks like this dude just threw away his career and lost money while doing it.
