Australian Golfer Jason Day Goes Viral For Sporting American Flag Shorts During U.S. Open Practice Round

Salute his shorts.

Folks, it’s U.S. Open week. For golf fans, that sentence right there means a lot. The PGA’s third major of the year is almost always set up as the most difficult and challenging golf course that professionals play each year. The greens are lightning fast. The holes are extra long. And the rough is as thick as a bowl of oatmeal.

This year’s tournament at Oakmont Country Club is no exception:

I’m so ready to sit on my couch and watch the carnage play out.

Professional golfers – and those who qualified for the U.S. Open (like one guy whose day job is a dentist) – are now making their final preparations before the competition starts on Thursday. Whether it be getting adjusted to the speed of the greens, or trying to figure out a way to hit golf balls out of the 5-inch thick rough, everyone that’s teeing it up is attempting to get honed in for a chance to get their hands on the U.S. Open Championship trophy.

One of those players is the Australian born and former major winner Jason Day. The talented 37-year-old won the PGA Championship back in 2015, and seemed to be destined for stardom afterwards. However, bouts with both back injuries and vertigo have held back the professional golfer in the past decade… though he does seem to be finding his footing once more and playing really good golf.

Unfortunately, anything that anyone ever talks about when it comes to Jason Day in the modern day are his outfits. The professional golfer became the first tour player to sign on with the apparel company called Malbon back in early 2024, and the clothing brand has seemingly made it their prerogative to come up with the most outlandish and borderline silly golf attire – and make Jason Day wear it.

Here’s an example from earlier in the year:

It’s just fashion, I suppose.

Though I haven’t mustered the bravery to defend any of Jason Day’s previous Malbon collaborations, I can get behind this most recent get-up that the PGA Tour player sported in his U.S. Open practice round. What better way to ring in the event and celebrate the fact that the U.S. Open is here than to wear American flag shorts?

I’ve got a feeling Malbon golf just wanted to get their 4th of July line out there for the world to see.

For a guy that was born in Australia (and currently lives in Cleveland, Ohio), that’s quite the bold, American clothing choice. But hey… I kind of like it. How could I, a full-blooded American, see the Stars and Stripes on a pair of shorts and not be a fan?

It’s truly one of the most patriotic clothing items I’ve ever seen:

And of course, everyone on social media that has also discovered the U.S.A. shorts in real time have been quick to praise and applaud the Aussie for wearing shorts that scream 4th of July BBQ:
