Oh man, this one hurts.
I know they’re not country music, but I grew up listening to 3 Doors Down all through high school and college. The rock band from Mississippi that currently consists of frontman Brad Arnold, guitarist and background vocalist Chris Henderson, drummer Greg Upchurch, lead guitarist Chet Roberts and bassist Justin Biltonen had a ton of hits starting with their first single “Kryptonite” back in 2000, and going on to release songs like “Be Like That,” “When I’m Gone,” “Here Without You,” “Away From The Sun,” “It’s Not My Time,” and many more.
I’m sitting here wanting to go back and listen to their entire catalog again as I write this. So many bangers.
The band was scheduled to go on tour starting this summer with Creed, Daughtry and others for the Summer of ’99 tour, which kicks off in July. But unfortunately, 3 Doors Down has had to pull out and cancel their upcoming tour dates after lead singer Brad Arnold announced today that he has been diagnosed with cancer.
In a video posted to social media, the 46-year old Arnold revealed that he was recently diagnosed with stage 4 clear cell renal cell carcinoma, which has also metastasized into his lungs:
“Got some not so good news for you today. I had been sick a couple of weeks ago and went to the hospital and got checked out, and actually got the diagnosis that I had clear cell renal carcinoma that had metastasized into my lungs. And that’s stage 4, and that’s not real good.”
But despite the news, and having to step away from the road, Arnold said that he was remaining optimistic thanks to his faith:
“We serve a mighty God, and He can overcome anything, so I have no fear. I really, sincerely am not scared of it at all, but it is going to force us to cancel our tour this summer, and we’re sorry for that.”
And Brad even referenced one of his own songs that can help him get through this tough time:
I’d love for you to lift me up in prayer every chance you get, and I think it’s time for me to go listen to ‘It’s Not My Time’ a little bit, right?
Thank you guys so much. God loves you. We love you. See you.”
You really hate to hear that from Arnold, especially at such a young age like just 46 years old. 3 Doors Down is one of those bands that immediately takes me back to high school, right after I got my drivers license and just cruising around listening to songs like “Kryptonite” and “When I’m Gone.” I saw them in concert back in 2009-ish and they put on an incredible, high-energy live show. (When I saw them, Arnold tossed his mic stand while he was rocking out and ended up taking out one of his bandmates on accident. Pretty sure it broke his leg, but he continued on with the show).
Hopefully Arnold can beat this latest challenge and get back out on the road soon – and for many years to come.
