NASCAR needs way more drivers like Cleetus McFarland.
I’ve been saying for years now that NASCAR needs its drivers to show more personality to attract new fans. With the pressure from teams and sponsors for drivers to be buttoned up and professional, the result is a bunch of drivers who never really show any personality in front of the camera and give mostly stock answers during interviews to keep from creating any headlines.
And then there’s Cleetus McFarland.
The 30-year old up-and-coming driver, whose real name is Lawrence Garrett Mitchell, is a YouTuber and race car driver who’s run two races in the ARCA Menards series so far in 2025, and he’s got more personality than pretty much the entire NASCAR Cup Series garage combined.
After his first ARCA start at Daytona, McFarland gave an interview after wrecking out of the race that became an instant classic:
“Well I was having the best day of my life, ripping around Daytona like a bald eagle. I was flat out. Avoided a wreck, which was awesome. I thought I was the best driver to ever exist in that moment…
I’m hot doggin’ into 1 & 2 and the car lost it in front of me… Tried to go around it, misread it, zigged instead of zagged when I should have zagged and I zigged, and BAM, blew the front end right off my hot rod.”
He’s like a real-life Ricky Bobby, and I can’t get enough of it.
Of course I’m not the only one who can’t get enough of Cleetus: During his second career ARCA start yesterday at Talladega, at one point he had over 70,000 people tuned into his in-car livestream on NASCAR’s YouTube channel, which is just an insane number for not only a single driver but for an ARCA stream in general.
And during a press conference at ‘Dega, he once again showed why he’s been able to grow such a strong fanbase with another all-time classic quote.
Cleetus was asked about Talladega Boulevard, the road that runs through the middle of the superspeedway that’s notorious for the wild parties and drunken antics that take place at night during race weekends. And he was said that most of the things he saw on the Boulevard weren’t safe for YouTube:
“I’m gonna tell you something about the Talladega Boulevard. I preach just living the freedomatic life of being an American. But I don’t know if I really knew the true meaning of freedom until I stepped foot on Talladega Boulevard. I mean, we’re parked up and there’s just action happening. I can’t get into the details, because honestly, it’s not cool man, whatever happens on Talladega Boulevard has to stay there. I would say that, if I posted some of the things that we saw, my channel would be deleted.”
And he couldn’t hide his admiration for the fans who party on Talladega Boulevard:
“You go on Talladega Boulevard and you’re seeing purebred Americans enjoying life to the absolute maximum. They love two things, that’s boobs and turning left. That’s Talladega Boulevard down there and they’re just living that life.”
I mean, who doesn’t?
I’m going to continue to say that NASCAR needs way more personalities like Cleetus McFarland. Just an all-time interview every time he’s in front of a mic.
