If you or someone you know is struggling with thoughts of suicide, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 800-273-TALK (8255) or text Crisis Text Line at 741741.
You just never know what somebody's going through. Tragic news rocked the world of professional golf on Saturday as reigning Sony Open in Hawaii champion Grayson Murray passed away at only 30 years old. https://twitter.com/Daniel_Rapaport/status/1794443875169534341?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1794443875169534341%7Ctwgr%5E0e911c1020afe8e659d3c29188083ea4389fad4b%7Ctwcon%5Es1_c10&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.whiskeyriff.com%2Fwp-admin%2Fpost.php%3Fpost%3D595380action%3Dedit Murray opened this week's Charles Schwab Challenge with a 2-under round of 68. He struggled through the second round and withdrew from the tournament after 16 holes in the round due to an unspecified illness. In a lengthy Golf Monthly feature that came out in January, Murray opened up about his struggles with alcoholism, anxiety, and depression. He claimed his first PGA Tour title at the Barbasol Championship back in 2017 as a rookie. However, Murray indicated that he would drink during tournament weeks, and said he felt "invincible" as a result of achieving instant success at golf's highest level. But Murray seemed to have turned things around (or at least that was the narrative that was pushed), with many who knew him expressing their shock at his sudden passing. Today though, Murray's parents confirmed that their son's death was a suicide. In a statement released by the PGA Tour, Eric and Terry Murray revealed that Grayson took his own life while reflecting on all who loved him: "We have spent the last 24 hours trying to come to terms with the fact that our son is gone. It's surreal that we not only have to admit it to ourselves, but that we also have to acknowledge it to the world. It's a nightmare. We have so many questions that have no answers. But one. Was Grayson loved? The answer is yes. By us, his brother Cameron, his sister Erica, all of his extended family, by his friends, by his fellow players, and - it seems - by many of you who are reading this. He was loved and he will be missed. We would like to thank the PGA Tour and the entire world of golf for the outpouring of support. Life wasn't always easy for Grayson, and although he took his own life, we know he rests peacefully now. Please respect our privacy as we work through this incredible tragedy, and please honor Grayson by being kind to one another. If that becomes his legacy, we could ask for nothing else." https://twitter.com/PGATOUR/status/1794746060742762924 Murray had previously spoke about his mental health struggles, saying that he wasn't ashamed that he dealt with depression and anxiety and that he hoped to use his platform to help others who were struggling: https://twitter.com/anymanfitness/status/1794542202435056035 If nothing else, it's such a tragic reminder that you never really know what kind of struggles a person is dealing with, no matter how it may appear from the outside looking in. But as his parents said, hopefully his death can be used as a reminder to be kind to one another and always check on those you love. https://twitter.com/flushingitgolf/status/1794488019380056343
